Harbor Freight has some cost effective blasting equipment.

I just used a wire brush on my grinder and then wiped it down with mineral spirits and painted.

No, most of the oil field crews use beed now instead of sand

In my experience if you don't start with clean unrusted metal, you are going to have rust show up. I have tried ospho, and other like chemicals to deal with rust before painting. I have used a grinder with similiar results. Sometimes spending a little more up front will save in the long run. I have experienced that first hand. Spend the $150 or so to have it blasted then paint it yourself.

I agree with big_smith, you have put in alot of work and it looks great, spend a little more money and get a good finish.

Wired wheel grinder and then paint. The cheapest way to go.. but you will have some time invested.

Thanks for the compliments on the pit guys, wish I could take the credit, but I can't. I have a friend that's doing all the labor, I just buy what he says we need. After yall's comments, looks like I'll save up some cash and get it sand blasted and do it right. Been waiting for this pit to be finished for a long time, might as well make it look good in the end!

My friend has a gun that is connected to a airhose from the compressor and another hose that has a special oneway vale on the end of a clear tube......this tube goes into a 5 gal bucket of cleaned sand.......turn on compressor and balst away.....works great...leaves a little mess......dont know the price of the gun.....let me research it

found it....this one looks cheap but you get the point.....its only $30

hers an even better one from Tractor supply...just looked..its only $20...may not be worth choot

WEll bead Blasting would be the way that would wear you out less. But tiger discs... maybe about 80 grit, about 5 of them. take the top layer off with these and it will be all shinny for paint.

Btw- bead plasting will do the same as tiger discing the thing. But will not see the.... lines from the wheel. But it is getting painted anyway. A heavy coat of paint will cover this up.
