How would yall tackle this job?

My pit is almost finished, and will need to be painted. I know the best way is to have it sandblasted, then painted with hi temp paint. I'd like to save some cash and try to do it my self if it's doable. So what I'm asking is what all would I need to get the rust and old paint off and the metal ready for paint? Is it gonna be more trouble than it's worth? Also what kinda price should I look for to have this done?
    Thanks!

bead blasting will solve your problem the fastest

not sure if you can DIY or have a machine shop help you out

bring a couple of cases of adult liquids to the machine shop and see if they will barter

won't bead blasting possibly damage the metal? Other than sand blasting, a big ole flap disc and a whole bunch of elbow grease is my only suggestion

It would be WAY more trouble than what you'd pay. One end would get rusty before you got done with the other end!

If you've got a big air compressor you could blast it yourself.

bead blasting is a generic term as lots of different media can be used to remove rust and paint..... sand, soda , water, silica pellets, etc ......

it won't damage the metal because the media is softer than the metal

this process is used all the time in gunsmithing and the oilfield industry

                  an example

Hit up your local Carboline rep. I know in the past they've had some primers that you could apply directly to rusted metal, but don't know about the heat tolerance.

Ok I've had my concrete floors bead blasted and it takes a thin layer of the floor off. Thought you were referring to that

You might check with rental places you might be able to get a blaster. Its basically a drum that holds sand with a hose connection. I am going to be doing mine here eventually luckly I have a set up for it...
