Ever fall from a tree? Now I have(long read)

Sunday morning was shaping up to be a great morning. I got down to Lake Whitney good and early and was bundled up good for the morning hunt. All season I've hunted out of my climber but decided to use my ladder stand this morning cuz I wanted to try a spot where I've been seeing some doe crossing.

I found a tree that wasn't perfect but I thought it would work. After tying the straps from the seat around the tree to the ladder and tightening the center support to the tree I went up. At about 12 feet I started to attach my harness to the tree and then I felt a shift and then......snap.

Next thing I knew I was on the ground. All I can think of is that the center support slipped of the tree and the ladder buckled, causing me to swing towards the tree then I fell flat onto the right side of my back.

After a quick damage assessment and realizing that the good lord saved me from being severely injured, I piled my stuff on the ground next to a tree and got ready to hunt. I mean hell, why ruin a good cold morning hunt.

All I could think of then and now is my lil girl, who just had her 2nd birthday on Saturday. I know for a fact the good Lord was there with me cuz had I landed six inches to the right I would of landed on the broken section of the ladder that was in the ground.

Guys be careful. I preach safety at work and hunting all the time, and this is what happens when ya take a chance. Take the time to find that perfect tree even if it isn't the perfect spot. I'm amazed that I'm alright after falling from that height. I'm about 315 lbs and like Ron White said between 6'2 and 6'6 depending on what store I'm walking out of. So maybe my size helped in this matter I don't know.

Merry Christmas to all my fellow TBH'rs and be please be safe. God Bless Ya'll!

Yeah, actually saw about 10 deer all together. Grunted up a couple of lil basket bucks but they only came to within about 50 yards.

That's good at least you didn't have to experience the fall on a dry hunt.

Glad your OK, all that cold weather gear probably helped to pad your fall some. Good thing it wasnt hot that day!

Before I climb mine, I shake the heck out of it and jump up and down on the first couple of steps. Yes, it makes some noise but not as much as my carcass hitting terra firma.

I have seen a 7' tripod come apart and put a guy in ER. Not cool.

                    Glad you're OK.

Thank the good lord for that one. A fall from that height can do alot of damage. I've never fallen "while hunting", but early this year while checking out one of my tripods for squeaks...I was rocking back and forth a little...went too far and one of the legs (unattached of course) slipped out. Timber to say the least. Luckily just some scratches.

Man glad to hear you are ok. Fortunatley I haven't had a full blown fall. This season I had a screw in step snap off at the tree on the way up(about half way up to a 30 foot stand) and made a quick trip down.

Guys, that's why you should always stay attached to a safety rope while climbing. It pays to be safe. If not for us then for our families...
