Turn off vehicle when gassing up??

I've never really thought about it because I was always taught to turn off at the gas pump but my wife went somewhere with a friend of hers the other day and when they stopped for gas she left it running. When my wife questioned her about it she said that her husband (who is a state trooper) told her that is old and outdated from vehicles with points and distributer. She said neither of them EVER turn off their newer vehicles when fueling. I thought well they're just rolling the dice. Come to find out after talking to quite a few people they are not alone! There are a bunch of people that leave it running! What says the green screen? Btw, I'm taking gas not diesel.

I turn it off because I’m usually running inside to grab a tall boy for the ride while the gas pumps.

I always leave mine running accept for when I had my Camaro...that particular injection / intake on the LT4 engine would bog & struggle while filling vs all the other trucks / suv's over the years for whatever reason.

Never, anyone could jump in and drive away before you know what's happening.

I leave mine run 99% of the time unless I go in the store for something.

We would never turn off diesel trucks when re-fueling but would always on gas......till I noticed that no police or any other public works vehicles were ever turned off...so now I leave our gas vehicles running when I re-fuel

Only door that is open & unlocked is the driver's while I'm sitting in it waiting.

Still Gotta get past me & a pistol to get to my ride??

Is it even really possible for any make/year of any car to catch fire if left running while filling up?

It is advisable to turn off a gas vehicle when fueling with gasoline. The flammability limits are pretty narrow on gasoline, but never want to find out the hard way. You also have AIT and other potential ignition sources to contend with.

I leave the diesel running but not the gas. No reason not to turn the gas off if I'm outside pumping anyway.

I leave mine running. I do wonder if people are thinking I’m a dummy while I do it. But that A/C stays blowing cold!

I have the keypad on the door of my F150. If I’m going inside, I hit it as I walk past to lock the doors. Head inside and grab whatever and come back out. Type code in, and away I go. Same with my wife’s vehicle, except both of hers have the proximity keyless entry deal, so I press the button to lock the doors as I walk in, press it when I’m back at the vehicle and away I go.

Heck, I leave my keys in my truck most of the time when I’m out and about. Just use the keypad to lock the doors.

I turn mine off when getting gas. I’ve never seen or even heard of an occurrence though of anything igniting because it was left running. Just always been told it’s a safety issue
