    tube vs trough style feeders

I have heard people debate deer like to eat out of tubes more than they will trough because they don't have their heads down. I see photos with deer eating out of troughs all the time and was curious if anyone had issues with troughs and switched to tube style?

I have a 300 pound tube feeder now which deer have no problems eating out but was thinking about getting a larger trough style.

They eat attractant and supplemental feed off the ground. A trough is not going to bother them.

The only issue I could see with a trough (I have 4 Lamco timed protein trough feeders at my home place) is if you are in an area that gets frequent rainfall. In that situation, the feed can get wet and clump up in the troughs, and have to get scooped out before it gets nasty and bug infested.

I am in west Tx, so don't have to deal with that and IMHO, the trough feeders are the best way to go.

In the grand scheme of things, if the deer eat out of your feeder, it really doesn't matter which type you have.

They certainly don't eat acorns after climbing a tree. They eat them off the ground.

I agree 100 percent. But I have read where the trough blocks their view and they get spooked or are on edge while eating.

My oldest son primarily uses troughs in La. for corn and rice bran. They have no issues.

They love eating out of the troughs. Just like the raccoons.

Coons look like they have moved in

That's my problem too many coons. I have an old cattle feeder I would love to use but I know the coons would have a field day.

When I wrote trough , I meant the timed proteins feeders that have a trough system rather than a tube

I'm looking at timed protein feeders right now. I guess that is the big downfall. The coons can get to the trough style vs the tube style.

Do yall see more coon problems with the trough style?

I've been using a couple of cattle tubs to feed protein at a new spot I set up recently. Deer have no problem eating out of them. Have multiple mature deer eyeball deep in the tubs. They're eating with their head all the way in the tub when it gets low. No problems there.

Turkeys jump in them a lot and scratch around some, and the coons are all in them, backstroking around in the protein. No more coons than other feed spots though. Comes with the territory with any kind of feed though IMO.

Tell me about the coons. I will have 7 a night on a regular basis, set my traps and catch 4. A couple days later there are 7 back and its on repeats. I have never had more than 7.Its like they have a sign up sheet somewhere

Interesting. How to you handle moisture? I’m not far from you and use tubes and still fight moisture fowling.
