If he's shooting it in the shoulder or heavy bone it's going to be all bent up and smashed when it hits the ground. From there it'll bury itself in the dirt. It's not like he's shooting straight out in front of him where the bullet could skip. Unless there's a thick steel plate on the other side of that deer laying on the ground I don't see how a ricochet is possible.

I'ts the neighbor aspect. Shooting a 243 on 10 acres. Who knows what the shape of the lot is. I call it a lot because there aren't a whole lot of big ranches that are 10 Acres. SMDH.

I agree. And in my experience bullets that DONT exit either result in a DRT or a really ****ty recovery. I know which I’d pick hunting a small place.

At that range he should use a slingshot.

if all I had was the 243, I’d neck shoot them being that close and the spine should tear the bullet apart pretty darn well.
I have used 12-ga #4 buckshot on hogs for many kills. The 3” magnum has 41 pellets and will kill a bunch. I have also used my 20-ga 3” mag with buckshot and killed 5 with shoats with one shot under the feeder.

Given stand height and shot distance he is worried about a problem that doesn’t exist. Tell him to shoot what he is accurate with.

I’d be afraid of not hitting bone in that close range scenario. I am an adamant neck shooter and have seen it happen. I shot a spike with a 7mm Mag/150gr soft point at about 40 yards. He laid where he fell for +2 hours until I was walking up to him, when he ran off never to be seen again. Only left a quarter sized speck of blood in the dirt.

Had it happen with a .22-250 as well at 30 yards. Only two deer I have ever lost.

I neck shot a spike with a 25-06 and lost it. Walked up to him and he blinked. I went back to the truck for a smaller gun to shoot again. We blood trailed forever and never found him. Bullet would've been 100gr core lokt

This is virtually an unanswerable question and If you have to ask it then it's probably a bad idea.
Always air on the side of caution especially when it comes to flying bullets.

Like others have said, maybe overthinking it. Appreciate his caution though. Shotgun with #4 buck shot and be done

If all he has is a 243. Shoot some 80 grain bullets. Won't be much left if it even goes completely thru the deer. If he misses a deer with a scoped 243 at 40 yards. He needs some range time
