Pass through Bullet on deer distance...

Have a buddy hunting a small property. Which has roads around it closest is 100 yards. He is worried about hitting deer and rebounding off the ground or if he missed and shot the ground how far the bullet would go after hitting the deer or the ground.

He is 18’ in a tree stand shooting down towards the ground at a deer at max 30 yards with a .243 with 95gr.

His plan is to shoulder shoot a deer to minimize exiting distance and hopefully dropping the deer.

Ground is sandy, and doubt even if he did a shoulder shot and shooting straight down that bullet would go into the ground.

I know there are a lot of different factors. But, seeing what guys think about a bullet after it exits the deer? I believe he is safe shooting down on the deer, but just trying to ease his mind.

Him being on a small property this is the only way, besides bow hunting but land owners will not let him have access if a deer runs on their property.

Just got me thinking about the energy of a bullet after a deer get hit? What guys think about this scenario and caliber.

Good frangible bullet in the cage would be my thought.

He has a 300 BO he thought about subs, he was worried about the bullet. But, at that point that deer is more than likely gone atleast running some distance before he dies.

Never know. Depending on county, there may be a law against rifle hunting on a property smaller than a certain size. Might want to look it up.

I wouldn't even go to subs. 300 BO is so slow IF it goes through a deer, then bounces off the ground, it's not going anywhere else.

Even if you sit in the house, you can still be struck by lightning.

I don’t like 300 Blk because I have never experienced a caliber with so many richlochets and non expansion

I’d shoot something that blows up fast like a 243 or 44 mag HP. I am a firm believer in 44 mag for small property and DRT

12 gauge with buck shot #4 is my favorite.

if all I had was the 243, I’d neck shoot them being that close and the spine should tear the bullet apart pretty darn well.

For sure I like the Frangible bullet route for the .243 hopefully it works. But, I do have a Rex Bullet Ammo for him to try that expands and destroys down to 700 FPS I believe.

Most of my 300 experience is not with special ammo. If it works it works

Maybe if he's that worried about safety, it's not really a good place to be shooting anyways. Bullets can do weird things after the triggers pulled. If he's not shooting in a safe direction anything goes.

Yep. How big of a place? Distance to nearest house? Dense cover or moderate cover?

If he's that high. At 30yds there is almost zero chance the bullet goes anywhere

At 30 yards why not buckshot or slugs
