    Video - What happened?

On today's episode of "How did I screw this up" we have a video of a shot sequence from this morning. My friends doe video from last week convinced me to try to video my shot for recovery efforts later. So here it is: 29 yards 440 grain arrow 275 FPS Rage Hypodermic 2".

Shot felt good and looked good....gave her an hour because it was still early. She ran off....light sounds of brush...didn't hear a crash. Upon tracking, found rear of arrow 6 feet later next to trail, located front 10-1/2" of arrow.

Not another drop of blood. Spent 2 hours combing the woods (thick stuff) never found another drop of blood nor the deer. Forgive the grainy footage. I have no idea how I screwed this up. Don't really have the cash to spare to call a dog, and I have tromped through the area thoroughly because I was sure she didn't go far.

Looks like shoulder and slightly quartered away. May be a little far forward. I'd give her several hours and then start walking out trails. She may open up and start bleeding a little ways in on the trail

Was the 2 parts of the arrow you found the entire arrow, or was there a middle part still missing?

it’s really hard to tell from the video, but my fist impression was that the arrow might have hit her a little higher than optimal????

The arrow was broke in two. No missing pieces. I have reviewed the footage multiple times. Not sure if you are interested but I can send you the unedited version if you want to look closer. Just pm a number. She was at 29 yards. I probably should have buried the pin a bit deeper in her chest but that's a "should've" at this point. I agree though, not optimal but doesn't look bad. I was convinced I would have my hands on her shortly after getting down.

The video distorts for me when I try to enlarge it, but I was watching it on my phone and didn’t say anything.

What Bisch said was the first thing that came to my mind though. Something like clipping bone causing the arrow to not really hit where it looks like but again, it’s kind of hard to say from what I can see.

If you could post pics of the arrow pieces with blood on them it might give more clues.

It does look to me like there is more than what one would desire of length of that arrow sticking out as she ran. It looks as if what was mentioned before that it could have hit the off side shoulder because she seemed to be quartered fwd and away slightly. Just my opinion.

How much blood on the arrow? It’s really hard to see on the video but have you considered that maybe the lungs weren’t hit?

She jumped the string (or ducked) When the arrow is about 3/4 of the way she starts to drop.

"How did I screw this up?" IMO that's why I never shoot past 20 yards. I bet if you had a higher frame video it would be clear how much she ducks.

How much and what color blood did you find on each end of the arrow? Zooming in it looks like maybe minimal penetration and may have struck hard bone leaving no major vessels or vitals hit.

Jumped string and big wide mechanical head on a light weight shaft and 30 yards out… principal cause for lack of penetration.

River Rat is dead on. Frame by frame. She ducked and rolled. Arrow hit at front of shoulder and exited base of neck. The ground likely stopped the arrow. It was right in line but she moved.

Same here, most of my corn piles are at 18-20y, even with my boys and the crossbow we stay within 25y at most.

Looks like she ducked and arrow hit high and forward. Like everyone said, hard to tell with the video.

I've looked at this a couple of dozen times but the quality just is't there to know anything for sure other than I definitely see the arrow flopping pretty good as she passes the feeder, comes around it and is then blocked by a branch on the right. I doubt this deer is likely to die of anything but old age but clearly she was stuck.
