Wife resigned from a custom home builder, crappy experience

My wife just left a position with a custom home builder after 6 years in the New Braunfels area and took a new position with a new custom home builder (better opportunity), same location. She was not happy after 6 years and was a dedicated employee. When she gave notice, the owners were very unprofessional, basically told her they trust her to finish her 2 weeks (Monday), she showed up today with her email/slack and all other accounts blocked. She called and left a VM with the owner saying how am I supposed to work, 10 minutes later, owners texted (no call) her and said to just leave, never come back. IMO, that is pretty crappy after all she has done, she was honest with them and never did anything wrong. That being said, life moves on and I feel sorry for the owners of a corporation that act in this way.

I now have a good contact if anyone is looking for a good honest custom home builder in the hill country.

    What took her so long?
no such thing as two weeks notice anymore
I work for one of the largest public utilities in Texas. As soon as an employee tries to do the right thing and gives two weeks notice the next day they will have security escort them out of the building. No loyalty on either side anymore. Tell her not to loose one minute of sleep over this.

Yep, that's how a ton of businesses operate these days.

With so much information electronic, 2 weeks notice is a dinosaur. Sounds like your wife made the right decision.

Understand that’s the way things are now, but this was a smaller company, only 6 employees in the hill country division. But yes, she is happy she moved on and it did take her too long to move on, she was waiting for the right fit.

Best of luck on her new venture!

as far as the 2 week notice goes, I commend her for it! As someone in the trades my helper gave me his notice several months ago so not to leave me booking more work than I could handle and I appreciate it as bad as I hated to loose him. He wasn’t gone any time and asked if he could come back to full time. I gladly hired him back. Had he just walked on me…. No way

I will say don’t build a home with her last company. Multiple reasons and I will post the name after a few weeks. They nickel and dime you, basically add cost plus to any change order. But their plus is to their discretion, sometimes upwards of 60%.

not taking sides at all on this........but on the other hand many small business owners ( just wanting to protect themselves) have already learned that some employees will give notice and then in their final days, will begin to steal and take company secrets so they can benefit themselves in a new venture. Your wife may feel that she was wronged by them letting her go early, but if they went ahead and pay her for those two weeks on notice, it is actually a generous thing by the former boss. They paid her and she doesn't even have to show up.
Just presenting another side of a common event in business.

2 Weeks notice is an antiquated idea, that is largely going away, and that is usually for the better.

it definitely speaks to someone’s charachter, there’s just too much risk sometimes.

Anyone bashing two weeks...I kindly disagree. All you can do is is the right thing......if the other side goes low that's on them. I'm certain that abandoning 2 weeks notice is not going to help fix the customer service crisis that we are currently living in. Good for your wife for doing it right. Sure makes it easy to cut their throat when the opp arises. F em

That's why I retired right then. A lot of companies show no respect, so why show them any. And then they wonder why employee moral and loyalty no longer exist!
                              Good Luck to your wife!
