    Mexico Duck hunting

Has anyone been to Mexico duck hunting? Looking for info on a lodge. Can you bring the meat back to the US?

I am sure there is some certain way to get it across, but I would imagine it's a tedious annoying process. Most birds are all left there for the local mexicans. We deer hunt over there.

I thought one of the benefits to duck hunting in Mexico was leaving the meat there?

If it were me, I would for the west coast for mixed bags of brandt, cinnamon teal, etc. Sorry, don’t have a recommendation though.

Wide open outfitters will pick you up in Brownsville and transport you to the lodge- 2hrs on the laguna madre.

Never hunted with them, but have heard good things.

I hunted for years in Mexico on a great deer lease and we had some great large ponds that held good quantities of ducks of all kinds that I could not easily get in Texas. I got excited, purchased my license to hunt them and killed some fantastic specimens I was proud of and wanted to mount! The part of the homework that I missed was that I had to be crossing back with a letter from an FDA approved taxidermist that they were going to. Evidently, they will allow them back if you have that, at least back then, and then the FEDS follow up to make certain the specimens arrive at said approved location....... sadly, I had to ditch 4 or 5 different species as I did not have that arranged and it was a weekend. They did have a list, but I figured the price would be at least twice what my taxi would charge..... oh well..... FYI, this was years ago, so things may have changed, but I would check this out before you go for it! Maybe an outfitter would have it all lined out!

You won't be able to cross them legally unless mounted first. And with approval. We used to freeze the ones we wanted to mount and slide them into dirty socks, mixed with other dirty clothes.

Never got caught but there's always a chance.

We shot them late into February and even early March so the roosters had full ploomage. They were beautiful that time of year and made amazing mounts.

What TK Ranch has said. You will need a letter certificate that the birds will go to a FDA Taxidermist. I would talk to who ever you plan to mount your birds, if they are FDA approved. I also know someone that brought some birds back and never asked for the certificate.

Depends on the agent and what mood they’re in !

If your hunting the laguna madre side in Mexico there really isn't any duck species there that you can't shoot in texas.

If you go to west coast mexico you can shoot some cinnamon teal and depending on the location pacific brant. Other than that its the same birds you can shoot in texas.

With all that being said, the season in Mexico runs to march so you can get better plummage on the birds you shoot.

We do a combo duck hunt in Argentina for duck and dove and its awesome. I have heard that Mexico can be great but never been....better food and drink in Argentina and different species to shoot at. Also makes a summer hunt for me so thats a nice break.
