Question for the A/C gurus - New home unit cycles a lot

    question for the A/C gurus...

we are close to having our new home build done. Being the inquisitive(skeptical) soul that I am I have been jotting down stats on when the A/C unit kicks on & off.

background - house is about 2000 sq ft. 9 foot ceilings except in main area which is 12 feet. new home, completely empty. Spray foam insulation with outside air intake into A/C unit. Which is a heat pump unit.

my issue(real or imagined) is it seems to cycle about every 5-6 minutes. Doesn't seem normal to me. I sent my stats to the builder who in turn notified the A/C folks. they sent out a tech and said the unit itself was fine. The thermastat had a return air setting wrong & they adjusted it. However, it still is cycling quicker than I expected. It keeps temp in house steady & I do have the ceiling fans going. It is controlled testing on my part. Subs are not going in and out. Test have been made...early, mid day & late afternoon. pretty consistent.

is this normal ? thoughts ? below is a picture of the unit info. I'm in Burnet county - hill country.

    thanx,

What is the temp reading at a couple registers vs return air?

Well I know nothing about HVAC but I’m in same situation as you- smaller house and unit though- We also have a TRANE. Mine kicks on maybe 3 times an hour

that, I have not checked. But I will. Where is a good place to get one of those type temp gauges?

How close are supply registers and returns to each other. If they are too close, that can cause short cycling.

I also believe the newer operating theory / design is to have units run more often in shorter cycles. I believe the intent is to use less energy overall.

            I think…

just to clarify, it comes on and runs for 5-6 mins and then shuts off for 5-6 mins, and continues this on and on?

You have a nice thermometer for your BBQ cooks?

That would not go well in Houston or SE Texas.

At the grate where the intake is and the grates around the house? Are some rooms nice and cool?

You can get a Klein IR5 at Home Depot I think.

David - Do not hesitate to inspect everything. Now is the time to find stuff. It all adds up!
I didn't move in for a year after my house was built and it took me too long to find a few things. Finding issues now will save you troubles down the road. There are a million things to inspect.

I still laugh at having two outlets in my master closet about 1.5' apart but none in the bathroom (shared wall). Was like Duh! Did the electrician not think at all?

I just dealt with this about 3 weeks ago on a custom I finished. It would cool the house about 4 below the set temp and then warm the dang house back up to set temp. Whoever came up with this idea is dumb as ****.
