I really like Irma's in Houston. A lot will call it TexMex but I find some of the dishes a bit more authentic espeically some of the specials

Mexican food needs lots of cheese! And they shouldn't serve hamburgers in a Mexican restaurant.

Same answer to both questions...find a little "hole-n-the-wall" place, without a perfect health inspector score, with la abuelita in the kitchen cooking! Those right there are always the best places!

Might as well get the enchiladas at Luby's Cafeteria and call it authentic. =)

There are some good ones in this area. Daysis in Winfield and Taqueria Lupita in Winnsboro are really good.

The kung flu killed my favorite Taqueria at northside, and I’m still mad about it.

In Austin, I prefer Matt's El Rancho, open since 1952 (tacos al carbon with sides of queso and guacamole salad, plus pecan pralines) and I had some Chuy's yesterday that was good. Good tortillas.

Chuy's is more New Mexico Mexican Food than true Tex-Mex. Wife's best friend was a manager there for many years.

RiverRat you need to go to the Catholic Church for breakfast! Slide between Benny Boyds and the church. You are welcome.

Back in college I used to eat at one in the back room of a boot shop and clothes store in Marshall. Cant remember the name, but that place was good! No clue if it's still there.

Not really. They have real queso and classic tex mex enchiladas. Texas style salsa. They do have some green chile sauce but that's about it.

I grew up in San Benito down in the Valley, where Tex-Mex originated…Chuy’s is not Tex-Mex. Sorry.

Just like Taco Bell is not Mexican food.

I'm not far from there and never have gone in. It looks like they could only seat 10-15 people, but I'll give it a try.
