I have heard that there is soy content in the plastic and that’s why, but I don’t know that. They chew the wires, and we all know that !

BTW, I don’t have a rat problem because I have two Tom cats. Cat food is cheaper than repairs, besides that, I like ‘em.

Don is right about the soy content in the insulation... Some companies made wires with the insulation made from a soybean oil based polymer... The rats/mice think there's food there so they chew the wires looking for the food... That's why they sometimes chew right up to the firewall on cars/trucks... Import cars are the worst. My hunting buddy has a Jeep Cherokee (one of the newer ones that is essentially an SUV and not a "Jeep-looking" vehicle). He took it to our deer lease to leave it as a ranch vehicle... They chewed his wiring harness to his lights and a couple other things right up to the connectors in a few places... He worked all weekend getting them reworked so he could use his Jeep... Now before he leaves the ranch, he does a "mouser" treatment to his Jeep... It's rather funny to watch and see what all he puts under the hood!! He's got a high-dollar ultrasonic device that also flashes lights and squeals, He puts Peppermint oil... the concentrated stuff that you can smell 2 camps over, moth balls, and those smelly Bounce dryer sheets... He has 12 volt ultrasonic devices under the hood and in the back where his tail lights/trailer plug is located that go all the time... Oh and we all leave our hoods unlatched and propped up just a bit so it's not dark or dry under the hood... Not sure what works for him, but so far, since he's been doing his mouser treatment, he has not had anymore problems...

Oh and some of the guys had issues with them inside their campers/RV's... We all run those ultrasonic devices in about every room in every camp and they have done a good job so far of keeping the mice/rats out... We have probably 20 mouse/rat traps baited in our camp (16X80 mobile home), but we have those "mousers" in every room... No mice/rat infestation so far (since 2015).

They're wanting you to put down some good tasting bait for them.

                Yep it sure will...

Some will surely disagree with this suggestion and that's ok, IDC, but keep everything sprayed down with a light coating of diesel. Spray 3-4 times a year. Most will evaporate but a slight oily residue is left behind. Mice and rats can't stand this. Been doing this for years on my zero turn mower and all lease vehicles. It also prevents rust.
I learned this trick from an old farmer years ago.

They chewed up a bottle of staybil and a tube of grease. I don't think oil bothers these rats.

They ate thru my boats main motor wire bundle while it was on my lift over the water. 13 wires in the bundle. Took all day long to splice and waterproof every one of them.

Baby coons are way worse than rats but you will think its a big rat.

They got into the main one in two spots, but didn't get any wires, just the outter sheath. I pulled out ever wire that ran under the floor, even stuff that was working. They chewed on all of it. I bought some wire cover mesh that is supposed to help protect them. I think I might run the wires in old garden hose also..
