That’s what I did when I had a lease. I figured if they wanted to eat,I’d give them something. It worked !

Yup, I have worked on several tractors for friends that rats destroyed the wiring on.

Dont know if they make the nests in the compartment and they are just board or if they actually eat the crap.

I had that happen about 10 years ago.. and read if I keep box fan on full blast under the cover it keeps them out. I did that and have not had a rat problem since.

I never did post an after picture for this project. I tried to protect everything as much as I could. I ran all the wires under the floor inside garden hose and covered with wire loom. They have to chew thru 4 layers to get to copper. Click image for larger version

I've heard that they don't like peppermint so I'm gonna put some peppermint oil on some cotton balls and put a couple under the floor and console of my boat.

It's a constant concern with the 4Runner we leave at camp.

                    1. Leave it parked facing N/NW with the hood propped 1/2 way up, so when it's cold...it's really cold under there.
                    2. Keep those green Tom Cat poison bars scattered all over camp, especially around the truck and camper.
                    3. All corn is stored in steel barrels.
                    4. We keep the grass mowed short as far outward from camp as the brush allows, and weed eat/round up around trailers.
                    5. I spray all under the hood of the 4Runner with that pepper based spray from the feed store.

We occaisionally get some critters around, but normally outside, and we trap them while we are there.

I lubed all the wires with peppermint oil when I pulled them thru the hose,

Get 2 - 3 feral female cats. Make sure they have been fixed. Keep them around. They will take care of the problem. Just provide enough food that is necessary.

There has to be some validity to the newer wire harnesses having a tasty coating. Grandpa had half a dozen OLD tractors around the barn with ZERO rat wire damage over 40+ years. But the Kubota UTV could set there over the weekend & get chewed up! We used to secure fly repellent cattle ear tags under the lids to reduce damage. Also put the tags inside electrical breaker boxes to keep fire ants out. You get the ear tags at Tractor Supply.

i hate rats more than hogs.

Try putting a bar of Irish Spring in places they are the wires. It really works to push them away. Also, fresh dryer sheets work well.

I fill a four to five foot long piece of 3 inch steel pipe with Tom Cat green blocks that I get at TS. Coons can’t get to it. Rats and mice empty it in a few weeks. Just lay the pipe on the ground near your unit. So far it has worked fine.
