Help with Registration and transfer of a boat title

Bought a new boat in 2018 with my sister and husband. Registered in my name with my sister as co owner. He has since passed and I recenlty bought her out.

Never done a transaction with an individual so never had to work through maze of forms in transferring a title. Consider myself of above intelligence, but holy hell these TPWD forms are confusing!!

For sure many on this site have done it and can offer some tips.

    Thanks in advance!

I did it online. I have a ninth grade education. For real. A lot of the blanks don’t have to be filled in if they don’t pertain to your situation. You can do it !

I filled out and took it to a local.office. they were very helpful and helped me make changes to the form I had filled out wrong on a couple spots

This is the only form you need for TPWD.

It is very helpful if the buyer and seller go together to TPWD to transfer with the boat. That way any discrepancies can be fixed on site.

I’ll be doing it again on Monday afternoon.

          Good place to start: https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/o...rship-transfer

boat and motor transfer thru tpwd

          trailer thru county tax office

if you have a local TPWD office, might run by there first. Keep in mind, they are cash or check only, no CC or debit card

As long as we’re playing fast and loose with reality, just get out yer crayons and yer big chief tablet, and write yourself up a new title!

I had hail getting a boat motor title transfered to me and ended up picking up the prior owner and bringing them to the TPWD Office at Hwy 59 / Beltway 8. May be easiest to do that with your sister?

Just remember you have to transfer the boat ( 1 form), outboard motor (another form) both with TPWD then the trailer with DMV. It’s a cluster I am heading down to my local dmv office for a new trailer plate apparently I left mine somewhere between corpus and Kerrville the last time I hauled it

It’s going to be a Bear. Doing the transfer at their office is going to be best especially if you walk out with a transfer. I’d bring a death certificate just in case

this is somewhat unrelated so sorry if I am thread hijacking.....but NEVER EVER NEVER buy a boat to try and register in Texas that does not have a title.....Texas has cracked down extremely hard on the "lost title" type things and it is pretty much impossible now in Texas to file for a lost title or to get a boat with no title registered

just tossing that tip out there

Keep in mind some county tax offices can do it all. Montgomery County has a one stop shop near the lake. I'd look for one of those

Sister is alive and co owner to my understanding

If you have a office near you the best thing is to take her with you and do it all there with them

What I have learned to this point

1)Others that know me have correctly pointed out the fact I am a dumbass and not of above intelligence
                            2) Appears I have to to complete two forms PWD 143 (Boat / Hull) and PWD 144 Motor) for TPWD and then go to county seat and tend to trailer separetely
                            3) I have an office within 20 minutes (Beltway 8 and 59) which is good...
                            4) My seester lives in Austin ..which is not good for the ease of us both going to the same location

I think I will now work towards filling out the form in draft, taking it to TPWD office to confirm it's accuracy, then arranging to secure my seesters signature

Anything see things differently (please feel free to correct #1, if you disagree with Dale (or myself)....

have your sister mail you a notarized letter stating you can sign the transfer paperwork for her? way easier for her to get a letter notarized than it is to drive to austin, OR if not in a hurry mail her the paperwork to sign then mail it back. or just sign her name
