Hardwired CCTV cameras can use Wi-Fi for remote viewing, but require electricity for operation. It is a more invasive and difficult installation, plus there is the additional cost of the NVR for the video storage. The cost is higher but the video is more secure and stored locally. You can also get CCTV cameras with significantly better resolution and night vision capability.

Wi-Fi cameras require Wi-Fi but can be battery operated. Some brands/models can be connected to electricity with battery back up and have built in SD cards for storage during short power outages. Power outage normally leads to interruption in internet service as well. But, this stored video will then be uploaded when Wi-Fi signal is restored. Take a look into Google Nest cameras before purchasing anything else. They also have a 24/7 recording option that is much better than the short, motion activated, clips that most Wi-Fi cameras offer.

Señor Smeone, I agree that wired cameras are way better and obviously impervious to jamming. Do you know of a decently priced and reliable wired system??

I unfortunately do not I have not had one installed to give a recommendation

as to what others have said about shaving cream, power, electricity etc.

if your cameras are jammed and you are home you will see nothing and it may well take you a bit to figure out they are jammed....probably when someone comes into your home after jamming them

if they are not jammed and you have a good system you will most likely have at least two cameras that hit all areas so anyone coming into "spray something" on the lens will still be seen as they move towards any camera and they will be seen on one camera as they move to cover the lens of another

if the idea is to get video of who stole your stuff while you are not home......who cares as if the police act on "person in hoodie in black vehicle" (as they describe most hard core criminals on the news even killers and rapist).....I guess having something to give the police or to watch over and over to see how your stuff was stolen is better than nothing, but the new reality is people need to be more concerned about what is going to happen WHEN HOME and cameras are what gives you a hint of something happening and a hint of movement and numbers

as for a power source......well generally I am not reading incidents of the power being cut and even back in the late 80s in San Antonio when my parents house was empty while for sale and the phone and cable lines were cut and the person that had good knowledge of where the "horns" were installed in the area (probably a construction worker for the homes still being built a block over) and they broke in, ripped the horn out in less than 30 seconds, and stayed in the house all night going through the very few things that were left......well they did not cut the power to the home even though they KNEW t was vacant

you can also get small back up power supplies that will easily power a lap top, cable modem, camera interface, cameras etc for cheap


the bottom line to me is here is the new reality we are going to be facing for a while.....if you are strongly middle class to upper middle class and you have things at home to protect especially family then you need to be prepared for PROFESSIONAL criminals to be targeting you and yours......you need to be prepared for the police to be unprepared and lacking in knowledge of what is already here and what is coming

you need a FULL system of security and that is not a great deal more than "just toss up some wifi cameras"......it will cost more though......shield cable/phone/internet wires.....if possible shield power lines from the box to the inside and secure the box on the exterior wall......better yet try and have that run where only the meter shows (if that is even needed with wifi meter reading now)

people need to remember that in other countries where these pros are coming from there is very little straight "middle class" there is a lot of poor, a little bit of middle class, a bit more upper middle class, and the very wealthy......and all of the middle class to wealthy needs to take their personal and home security VERY seriously because the people coming for them know there is little chance of getting caught even if they kill everyone in the home and they will think nothing of doing that.....and those that are coming have seen (and some probably have installed and worked with) all types of systems, alarms, dogs, fences and on and on......they view the USA as kids in a candy store where pickings are EASY and the police while more plentiful and a great deal less corrupt and much more in favor of getting criminals.....they are simply not prepared and are not knowledgeable and in some areas their "supervisors" are not going to allow them to gain the knowledge to stop what is coming

so they do not need to just "invade the home" although they will....and often times they might not even be armed because they know that brings a greater charge (though lets be honest in a lot of areas not much more) and they also know as long as they just "steal stuff" that in most areas the police will treat it like any other theft and do little or nothing about it

one can look at it like cartels operating in the USA (well because they are cartels)....."cartels" have some "rules" and one of those is do not do things that make huge news.....because that brings the heat.....I think many can remember when cartels had those same rules in Mexico and when they enforced them with a VERY HEAVY HAND.....and then what happened.....well drug crack downs, border closings, cartel fighting for areas, splits in cartels, leadership voids

and the end result of that was those on the low end of the scale were not "earning" like they wanted to.....and those at the top were not able to keep them under control.....so you have mass chaos......because those that are sloppy, careless, brutal, lack any morals at all, care nothing about the police, jail, life, their community etc were able to start doing about anything they wanted

so that gets us back to the USA and home security and WIFI cameras and other "cheap, easy, simple" things......word spreads FAST on the streets and even faster now......you do not need to worry about these professional crime tourist jamming your home and coming in blasting....that is not their MO and not what they are looking for or to do

but you do need to worry once the "Canadians" and the like start to hear about these jammers.....and the meth head porch pirates with nothing to do but walk around all day from porch to porch (as if they really even care about getting on camera or will face any real consequences)

THESE are the types that will hit the jammer, know your cell phone, wifi cams, internet wifi etc are out and WILL come through the door ready to blast.....they are NOT the ones that will cut power lines, spray shaving cream, cut phone and cable cords.....especially if it takes any effort at all......they are the missing links, they are like the ones just ravaging Mexico now.....they are the ones looking for 'cheap, easy, quick"

and THEY are the ones that you need a good quality camera system that will ALERT you when they are on your property and where they are so YOU cam move inside your home to protect you and yours

if you want a camera to watch a few people take your stuff when you are not home or when you are sleeping and they get in the garage or back porch....WIFI is great (until even the lowest educated "Canadian" or porch pirate gets a jammer)......if you want a camera system to help protect you and yours when those low educated "jam and blast" types catch on to what is going on and bring what is coming to us here in the USA (like it already is in a lot of other places even for average middle class types)......then get something much more robust and have a chance

work with a professional that understands the difference between having good videos of your stuff being carted off and you and your family being home during a threat from "juss do it" types.....start with the PROPER basics and a good foundation.....do not start with something that is false security and that will need to be replaced sooner than later
