I’ll throw redfish in the trash(never have)over flounder or crappie fillets.. Heck Sheepshead is better eating than Reds and they get NO respect!!

Never knew redfish weren't edible. Love me some grilled redfish on the half shell over a mesquite fire

I’ll have to try cooking on mesquite.
I just love the adrenaline buzz I get catching them on light tackle.
If it wasn’t so windy I’d be redfishing.

For trout you just fillet the fish- Put a slit by the back bones enough to pinch. Grab and pull. All the rib bones come out complete. I’ll take a few picks next time I keep a few and post on here. When I was cutting them out I would often clip at least one fish too close and end up finding bones when eating.

Redfish were at the bottom of the keeping for eating scale before I learned about bleeding fish. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with sheephead fillets. One of the best in my opinion.

Definitely a gamechanger with Redfish & Black Drum. I bled out 3 of them Saturday.
I generally bleed them OTW back to the boat when wading & just string & bleed when boat fishing, just have to remember to bring them back in the boat before driving off

Good info!!! Favorite fish we brought back from Venice was sheephead but you're lucky to get a fish stick sized piece of meat of a big one! Would be nice to make the reds taste better.

up here in the highlands we have no reds but we have stripers. Many will complain about the red line or red meat in them. I suppose this cut and bleed method would work for them also?

bleed any fish and they are better. Gut them on the spot and ice them up.

First time I have ever heard of anyone saying there was a problem with eating redfish!

Glad you’re enjoying them though! I’ve almost moved just to half shell on the grill topped with a Cajun butter. Can’t beat it.

Same here. Never heard of redfish as inedible. Been eating them my whole life. I get it get though I personally find any catfish more than 4 or 5 lbs nasty. Prefer catfish that are 3 -7 oz per fillet. Smalller the better. Have always bleed any larger fish 5 lbs +.

They don’t call’em saltwater carp for nuthin’, pass.

Bay snapper are way underrated, because most don’t know how to clean them.

Hope to try this out soon. We eat a lot of reds and I have never bled them but I always cut the bloodline and red meat out.
