I remember my grandparents having a CB radio in both their trucks and a Home base unit at the ranch. They could talk to each other just about anywhere in Menard County. I wish I knew what system they had.

How that happened is a mystery.
That tells me that it was not a problem at towers, nor was it a problem at any other level that the signals travel. To me, that sounds like batches of SIM card numbers were taken offline in some way. So this seems like, in order for it to affect the entire country, to have taken place in some centralized data center. The SIM card numbers would be one thing that is unique among every phone, but I’m willing to bet those numbers and corresponding information for them are not always stored on the same server hard drive even if they are all under the same account.

Im no cell service expert, just able to look at things from a 10,000’ view.

Man who knows!! There are a few crazy/scary stories floating around about what it was by some tech guys.
            It was definitely something coordinated.

Our company's 800 number goes through my land line and then is forwarded to a cell phone. When the cell service dropped I was able to use my land line for incoming and out going calls. The last hurricane convinced me to have backup systems for power, internet, and phone.
Our land line is $95.00 a month. Ouch...

I've had my amateur radio license since I was 13 years old. I haven't been active in a long time but always renewed my license. I forgot and it expired and I have to retake the Technician test. It's easy, if you study using a phone app you can pass the test after a week or two of study.

Land lines are going away so cell based systems will be our only option until something newer comes along.

Bottom line, what will you and yours do *when* cell service drops for long periods?

3 of our 4 att quit. 2 are i-phones, 2 are Android. 1 Android still worked.

I's last person I know to have a cell phone. We dont even have t.v.

We made it w/o cell phones a long time. Wouldn't bother me to lose that tech, and social media too.

Too much info at folks fingertips that they don't need.

                      And.... stay off my grass!

Begging my wife to sell here in N TX and retire on maybe 20-40 ac in OK.

Build simplest barndo and live til we die! If someone wants to talk to or see us, they'll have to drive!

Only social media i do is TBH, and since the re-boot, not much of it anymore.

I pay for a land line because when I had a stroke at home in 2012 and could not speak, my land line 911 brought EMTs to my house in five minutes. Maybe my cell would do the same, but I consider it stroke rescue insurance.
