    I wouldn’t know because a dozen eggs only lasts about two days in my household.

      Good thread.
      Last summer I busted open a rotten "farm fresh egg" from a dozen I bought at the feed store in Brackettville.
      Thank funky smell stank up my kitchen and nostrils really good for a bit.
      Dang what a smell......

          The non-washing thing gets me about farm eggs. All that chicken crap on them can't be cleaner than washing them.

            There is a film called the "bloom" that coats an egg. It keeps air out of the porous shell. When you wash that off, you wash off that line of defense against them going bad. My wife does rinse her eggs off though and I can tell you from experience that we can't tell one bit of difference in the time it takes for them to go bad. Probably because we eat them too quickly to notice.

              We never wash ours unless absolutely filthy and only then when about to use them. Have 50 chickens so I give away a lot too and we have never had a bad egg unless had a crack which sometimes happens in coop or me putting in basket. Normally eggs aren't very nasty unless it's muddy in run, I keep fresh shavings in boxes

                Not to be confrontational but what I've heard was that the bloom keeps out pathogens, bacteria and such. Egg shells are porous because air is needed for chicks to develop inside the shell. And also, refrigeration removes or nullifies the bloom. Just what I've learned over the years.

                  I usually leave our eggs on the counter for up to 3 week. I will use coarse steel wool to knock off spots of mud/poop.

                  If it is really covered, I use a paper towel with extremely hot water and wipe them down. I have heard cold water takes the egg coating off.

                    When we get covered up, they may sit in an egg basket on the counter for 2-3 months. We've never had any problem. They are not washed at all. If very dirty, I either chunk it, or wash right before using. When you crack open an egg, you know 100% whether it is good or not.

                      Yes sir. Water Glassing Eggs. It was a very common way of preserving eggs though the winter back in our ancestors day.
                      I have eaten eggs that were over six months using this method. Taste just as fresh. Only downside is the yolks don’t always hold up when frying.

                        I wash everyone batch I get daily to get the mud and poo off of them just so they look nice in our cartons. We've never exceeded 2 weeks on letting eggs lay in counter so I think we are ok. (I never knew there was such a thing as a "bloom". Learned something new today.

                          30 days un-washed & unrefrigerated is what I've been told. Ours don't last that long before they become my breakfast or a chicken-fried steak crust binder, though.

                              Developed watery eggs eat just fine…just a tad longer to cook and a tad rubbery. Pay no mind to the veining.

                              I crack in one pyrex measuring cup and dump into another larger when cracking a mess load fo whoop up Briars Leftover Quiche Delight to feed the kiddos. Its annoying to crack a spoilt egg into a load of good eggs. Ive mever but Ill go water float now since the GS consenseseseses.

                                I've never kept track of how long our eggs have been out but some definitely a month, have 9 dozen on counter and need to give some away today. Only been told of one bad egg and it was really bad, she almost threw up but it was probably cracked not old......If I'm using a bunch of eggs for something or in a recipe I crack in a different bowl just to be safe. We don't have a rooster either we have enough coyotes without one calling them in.....
