As some of you know the 587 Ranch borders almost 2 miles of Colorado Bend State Park. While the park has always run hunts they rarely affected us for a couple of reasons. One the brush on the park side was think with lots of trees and it was also a fairly long walk in to get along the back of our fence line. Well they cleared over 600 acres of the brush up to our shared fence. This causes several issues IMO (for me
) One, these hunters have zero reason to not take long shots and also now it's far easier to hunt. They also allow hunters to drive in now
I only know because I happened to be coming home and saw two trucks at park entrance and talked to them. 12 deer shot as of Sunday afternoon and hunt started Sat mid morning after they were shown compartments. That's on 5,300 acres with 10 compartments. No biggie...Until they said 5 of the 12 came off our shared fence line compartment. A young 8 point, 10 point, and 3 doe. They were not necessarily shot close to the fence but had to be fairly close as the compartment is more long than square.
Anyway. Just thought I'd share as I was telling the hog doggers they have to live with progress. So now I get to tell myself that LOL Just hurts losing 5 deer in 24 hours and makes me wonder how bad it's going to affect our deer herd.
Hope the kids that shot them bucks are happy. I know I fed them deer corn all summer for them
Now I have to get busy planning how to move all deer feeders/blinds to get deer more to the center of the 587 Ranch.
BTW - Before any bashing starts...I know they are not my deer. I know the park can hunt every inch and all that jazz. In the past I've even helped young hunters by telling them how to hike in and get close to one of my feeders.
