    Pheasant opener

Ran up to the farm in Iowa for opening weekend. Holy smokes are they evolving to be runners! If we didn’t have dogs I bet we would have been shut out. The birds ran in thick grasses for up to 50 yards. These are native birds not pen raised. Crisp temperatures of 25F both Saturday and Sunday. Nonstop drive to get back home, 14 hours is almost too much for a solo drive. Also, saw tons of deer but I’m skipping deer season this year.

I sure miss chasing those beautifully irritating little *******s! Many years of great memories chasing ditch parrots.

Sounds like a great time. Pheasant are one of my favorite things to hunt, partly because it requires well trained dogs to do so. Glad you averted the shut out.

I'm with you Dale. Some of my best hunting memories involve boots crunching through frozen stubble, a dusting of snow and following our Brittany in the Oklahoma Panhandle. I went with my father and his buddies many times. In recent years my pheasant hunting has been limited to pen-raised birds either over dogs or driven European style. That is fun for sure (and a lot more productive) but it is not quite like the hunts I remember in my youth.

Speaking of driven hunts “European style,” we have a trip scheduled for Fall to go to Spain for a driven hunt. Have never hunted birds this way. Don’t know if I’ll love it or hate it but I’m looking forward to experiencing it.

To be honest the passage of time has probably caused me to romanticize those long ago hunts a bit. It was likely more often than not, an all day march through crop fields and wet CRP grass , freezing my tail off to get a just handful of shots. (but that's not the way I choose to remember it)

Sure mis our annual trip of pheasant/quail hunting in southwest Iowa. We would load up our three English springer spaniels and head north for a solid week of fun.
Once our land owner cleaned up all his acres, pheasant habitat disapeared we quit going.

Jerp, we lucked out with the CRP being bone dry so our pants weren’t the usual wet mess to start the day. I only shot nine times - good thing I brought four boxes of shells. Someone there will make use of them as the season passes.

I like to call them Chinese chickens lol!!
I cut my teeth on quail, so shooting pheasant is like shooting chickens out of the air!!!
We are headed to Kansas in a week and a half for the season opener there. Can’t wait!!!

We love shootin' those suckers after deer season in Kansas. They're pretty dang easy to hit, until their not.

Had to miss it last year but headed back to South Dakota next Saturday to chase 'em. Like you mentioned, love watching well trained dogs work on them sneaky rascals!

My one and only hunt was back in 2019. It was a great hunt.

The 2020 got cancealed and the group I went with some how just hasn't pulled it together to go again.

Yes’m, heading up the second weekend of November with Squiggy and his crew. We’ve got a thread going on it. Everyone’s invited.
Me and my brothers are going to west Kansas for the opener of pheasant season. If anybody wants to join us, shoot me a PM and I’ll let you in on all the details. Will be hunting all public lands. We did ok last year considering the state was in a severe drought. Reports so far are looking really good. My nephew will have
