alot more complicated then that. If you spent 20 years building points, Do you want to burn it on a unit that may of increase tags 30% year before because DNR wanted to knock down age class by significantly to stop CWD numbers or is on decline because of 3years worth of drought.

When monitoring units and success rates is your job and your name sake its not a hobby.

My son lives in Utah and complains about out of state hunters having a better chance of tags than in-state residents. Another son who lives in Texas drew a Utah cow elk and a mule deer tag this year so maybe there is something to that. There is most anything you want to hunt there, Moose, Elk, Mule Deer, Pronghorn, etc. Unless you can put in the scouting time it's probably a good idea to hook up with an outfitter. There is both public land hunt and private land. Sorry, I don't know enough to provide a detailed comparison but, it'll give you something to research in the off season Utah may be a best kept secret for outdoorsmen.

I know this isn’t helpful, but good luck. I’ve been applying and/or paying for preference points every year for 10 years or so now in 7 states and have only drawn three tags (and I feel lucky that i did that). If I was starting over I’d use a tag service, but I’ve been doing it long enough now I have a handle on my own apps.

IMO CO is going to be your only shot at a bull in an OTC unit as of today. It will be a good chance to see if you are capable of the hunt and if it’s something you want to do.

If I were you I’d save your money and get into the outfitters pool in NM. If hunted public land isn’t important to you there are plenty of outfitters that hunt private land there that are much less physical.

New Mexico big game draw opened yesterday.

I was going over the 202e data and on pretty good units for elk (Not even the 16s in the Gila) odds for NR on the low end were about 0.76% and on the high end, 2.93%

you may could find some slightly better odds in some units, but not much better.

I look at the data for NM directly from the State site. Not GoHunt or any other service.

Pretty dang low...but I drew a 1% tag two years ago.

The NM outfitter pool isn't always better odds for every hunt code. In some, a decent amount lower odds for the outfitter pool...but regardless, the odds are very low on all of them, NR or Oufitter
