so i got shot at...a (long/true) story from the 903...LTC thoughts...

i will get this out in a few parts...

october 2021, i am a school resource officer and the kids have early release at school. i take off work at 12 and me and my then 11yo son are going to run out to the 903 to throw out some corn and mess around a bit on our 50 acres, he usually runs the tires off the 4 wheeler while i am getting a little work done. as we are about to pull out of the driveway one of his buddies rolls up on his schwinn and talks my son into staying home and riding around, so i head out solo.

i pull in the gate around 145p and jump on the 4 wheeler to head back to the feeder, i dont figure i will be there more than 10-15mins or so since i have to get back and work a football game that night. i get the feeder filled and decide to roll around the fenceline real quick. over the years, as you can imagine in ETX, i have found feeders and stands on my side of the fence as well as a few neighbors that love to sit on the fence facing my way. so i get up to the north fenceline and start heading east, about 10y from the fence, inside my property line, right past the newly established RV park that i get to share a fence with.

as i am passing the RV park, i see an older man walking around one of the trailers maybe 20-30 yards away from the fence. i kind of expect him to at least look over and maybe wave or something, but he doesnt, so i keep slow rolling by. this propery was pretty much split in the middle by a wet weather creek that ran north to south. west side of the creek was more open with scattered groups of oaks and cedars, the east side was pretty heavily wooded and thick. i am just about 40y into the thick woods on my north fenceline, literally rolling by some fence posts we have painted purple, and i hear someone screaming, loud.

i stop and look around a bit to see whats going on and i see a woman in full camo, getting out of a deer blind about 40-50y away on the property to the north. she is yelling something but i cant tell what, so i turn off the 4 wheeler. about then i hear her yelling "get off my propery!" i look around and dont see anyone else around so i ask her, "are you talking to me?" she says "he11 yeah im talking to you, ive already told you once to get the F off my property!" i am a little confused so i say, "im not on your property, dont you see the fence right there," as i am pointing at the fence between us.

going back over this incident in my head afterwards, i can clearly remember seeing her right arm straight down by her side as she was walking towards me.

she yells "i dont see no F'ing fence!" and without hesitation she raises her arm and is pointing a black revolver at me, i can clearly see the opening of the barrel, and before i can say *** i hear the pop and see the smoke.

i remember ducking down and yelling "are you F'ING serious!" and she says, "he11 yeah im serious get the F out of here!"

i am trying to start the dang honda and its not starting...because its in gear. i have to rock that thing a few times to get back down to neutral, i get it started and tear swerving a** out of the woods with my head down back to the truck, where my gun is sitting securely in the center console.

i call 911 and tell them what happened, they send out a couple local guys, one of which is a chief now and was a cop when i was in high school in the 90s.

i remember him saying, "so she shot at you? like she was shooting at a deer and was aiming towards your property? or did she shoot up in the air or something?" i told him, she had the barrel of that revolver pointed at my face and pulled the trigger.

i told him where i was and which property i thought she was on and that there was a man at the RV park that had to have at least heard, if not seen, the whole thing go down. he asks the other officer to run over there and see if he can find someone while he stays with me and i write out my statement. a few mins later i hear the other guy on the radio saying he has the woman at the property i thought she was at, so we both head over there so i can identify her.

we pull up and she is outside talking to the other officer, so the guy i am with walks over to them and then goes inside one of the trailer houses with her. officer 2 walks over and i say, "man tell me it was a blank gun..." nope, .38special he says, "she has already admitted that she shot at you and also admitted that she walked over to where you were after you left and that you were never on her property." she told them she is a good shot and if she really wanted to shoot me, she would have.

i ask him if he found the old man and he goes, "yeah, thats her husband and when i asked him if he saw what happened he told me 'yeah i did, she was just trying to make sure he never came on our property again'..."

the other officer/chief comes out of the trailer with the revolver, thanks me for my statement, and tells me that he is going to write a "deadly conduct" warrant for her just to be safe. uh, ok.

i rode back to my house without the radio on just kind of going back through the situation in my head. then went and worked the football game from 5p-11p and had a great story to tell all the guys.

not to get into the legal side too much, she ended up pleading it down to something, i cant get a return call from anyone at the courthouse. i also found out that she turned herself in 6 days after the incident, and before the warrant was ever written by the responding officer/chief because he got busy that weekend.

turns out her husband had been doing some side work for my family that week before this happened. she told the police she had been having cameras and feeders messed with or stolen and thought i was who was doing it.

so a question that came out of it, if i had my pistol with me, and got into a shootout with this woman in the middle of the woods, in the middle of the 903, with her husband 40y away watching.....how crazy could that have turned out? is he going to admit that she shot at me first? that i was never on their property? what if he had a gun and starts shooting at me too?

some things for you guys to think about...

i also couldnt stop thinking about how my son SHOULD have been there and he would have been the one riding out there most likely by himself. could have made things really bad.

I don't know but it sounds to me like she don't have no business owning a gun. What a dinger dong.

First off I’m glad you are OK ! You were definitely being watched over by our Lord! That’s East Texas at its best! I wonder if she and her hubby have any priors? I couldn’t live by anyone like that so personally I would sale that property and feel great about it! I guess she was hunting Pigs? Crack does crazy things to people.

strangely we dont have pigs there, but we did sell the place this spring and bought a new place with Darton in oklahoma!

the guy we sold it to told me to keep using the place however i want, so all my stuff is still out there and weve been hunting it since then, just a bit more carefully lol. 140" deer 30mins from home for free is tough to pass up!

ironically, the husband is the preacher at a local church and local handyman. if i remember right, all she had was a theft charge from a long time ago.

and yes, the Lord was watching over me that day no doubt.

so should we have never enjoyed our property again after that? my family knows them and against my concerns went and talked to them the night it happened. she apologized and said she knew she was wrong. i didnt care to hear it and my kids have never been past the deer stand on the west side of the woods since it happened, but we have been out there a few times.

If Some one points a firearm directly at me or indirectly for that matter I wouldn’t give them a pass! There is no viable excuse for that and an I’m sorry would not cut it! Knowing your family or not it doesn’t matter and hubby being a preacher doesn’t matter either! You do You though! I can’t believe this and you have a young son out there! How do you know when her wire is going to ground out again?

I agree and you're right, Who knows when she'll trip again. We owned that land for about 50 years and have had people trespass multiple times, shooting skeet out there when we aren't there, stealing stuff, literally hunting in stands on our side... I guess we could have just left the place to the locals but I didn't feel like that's the way I wanted to handle it.

I don't think anyone- including the law - would have blamed you if you had been armed and returned fire to defend yourself. However seeing how things turned out it's better for everyone that didn't happen. Even if justified that would be tough to live with if she had died.
