    good advice here. and get one with the long handle and built in brake/clutch thing that alleviates the need for this "pawl"

        This^^ as a temporary fix. My old hanging feeder setup had a hand-crank winch that the gear pawl was kind of sketchy on whether it would hold (due to cows). I ran a bolt/nut thru the winch body thru to the cable wheel and never had an issue after that. It took more time to use, but wasn't bad.

        I would still look at replacing the winch with a new one at some point. They do tend to get used well beyond their service life.
