I bought chicken wire and zip tied it about 1/3rd of it to my fence and the other 2/3rds bent on the ground. All the way around my fence... Stopped the digging out cold. They cant dig thru that!

unless you have a poop eating dog.....never understood that practice.

Lowes or tractor supply has the hot wire less than 50 bucks. I went with that route and it works flawlessly. Actually it gets caught in the lawn mower wheels from time to time but that was my error for not measuring. I actually shocked myself with it on accident (I was barefoot and stepped on it) and I didn't even know I was being shocked for the first several seconds and then I realized and got off. My dog however won't go near it.

Now when she sees a wire she stay away. We even made fake wires around the garden. Works great.

just tie him to a five gallon bucket....won't keep him from diggin out but he won't get far once he is on the other side. LOL

Hot wire will be your cheapest option, but I have seen the hog panel/chicken wire deal work too.

my dog pushes his way under the chainlink fence through the hotwire so if you have one like mine good luck he gets out everyday and is back in by the time i get home so the neighbors say

                    in-ground fence. Once and done.

that is funny. i had a lab that would not dig but would climb over my hurricane fence. so i tied a cast iron skillet lid to him thinking he would not climb dragging a pot lid around the yard. (dog stayed a kennel most the time)

he still got out but at least it gets peoples attention when a dog has a pot lid attached to him.

You have to check with your city but some hot wire fences are against city ordinance. An underground fence doesn't have to be under ground, with wooden fences I just use a staple gun and go along the bottom plank. Takes an hour tops and they run right at $100

no one seems to want to address the behaviorial issue...building a barrier (electrical) is only a temporary deterrent...Why is he trying to get out, address the behavior first, you may end up saving his life by keeping him from getting run over or shot or stolen by someone else

You might need to get the livestock grade fence charger. My dog only hit the
pet grade one once and never climbed the fence again ( he didn't dig, he
actually walked up a chain link like a ladder). My son used it on his Lab and
                            has no more escape problems.

dogs generally won't mess with their waste and will avoid it if put in the hole

True this its how I keep the neighbors dogs off our fence. My black lab makes lots of waste, then rake to their fenceline. No more digging dogs!!!
