I am speaking from personal experience. I wasn't diagnosed with depression, but I was diagnosed with ADD and anxiety.

If you have signs or symptoms of depression, seek medical attention. In my case, I contacted my primary care doctor and was referred to a therapist and psychiatrist. I can honestly say it is the BEST BEST BEST health decision I have EVER made.

In my case, my doctor prescribed me a type of medicine (Zoloft) that was not meant for me. I went off the deep end it seemed like.. and I felt worse than I did to begin with. I simply called my doctor and they weened me off Zoloft, I agreed to go see a psychiatrist (Who specializes in treating people for this).. She analyzed me, agreed that I wasn't depressed but anxious and a bit of a spaz (LOL), and hooked me up with the right balance of medicine for me.

I would suggest this same route for any and everybody. I have a therapist that I can go to anytime I need (if my life is overwhelming/ stressful etc). My fiance' was even influenced to seek out his own therapist to deal with stressful events as well.

The reason I recommend a psychiatrist is because your family doctor deals with colds/flu shots.. checks your blood pressure ETC and a psychiatrist sits down with you for hours on end and discusses the issues you have and analyzes your reactions and can pinpoint your illness. They know the drugs they prescribe and are willing to do what they have to, to help you.

God bless & I hope things work out for you.

Grew up with both parents like that. I have those tendencies, but you have to work at it. I've never been to a doctor. Study up on it, find your triggers, avoid them or work to control them. What has always worked for me is working out. Thoughts and prayers.

My ex-wife suffered from severe depression. As already mentioned here, get help. This is nothing to be ashamed of and it doesn't mean you are "weak" because you can't handle things. There are a variety of forms of depression, and it takes a professional to properly identify and treat your particular situation. You've taken the first step in acknowledging there is a problem. This, in most cases, is easily treatable. You can have your life back. Good luck, and prayers sent.

There's a huge difference in getting depressed and having depression. Go talk to your doctor and he/she will be able to help you. Believe me I know it's hard to do but it's well worth it. Some on here will probably post that there is no need for medication or no such thing as clinical depression, and some can be helped with counseling, but if you had something that triggered it and you let it go like I did, you can't sleep, can't eat and after a while you are so wore out you can't function. I'm a good listener and I am dealing with depression and anxiety from my family problems, working shift work, being a union committeeman(stressful!!!) and owning a business on the side. If you need anyone to talk to or just listen too please PM me.

I have known some people who suffered from depression. One word of advice is to be cautious what doctor/psychiatrist you choose. Try to do research on the doc's if possible.
Some medical people are quick to write prescriptions with vast side effects.
Be willing to listen to more than just the first doc/phsychiatrist you talk to.

One of the people I knew who was diagnosed with depression had a doctor to prescribe five different meds. One of the drugs was for alzheimers patients, which this person did not suffer from that condition.

The drugs caused him more problems and they really added to the problem rather than deduct from it. They took a long time to leave his system.

All I'm saying is to be cautious whom you seek medical advice from. One is not the same as another. I aught to know, I have family that are doctors and psychologists.

I pray that things work out for the best for you.

Millions of people get treatment for blood pressure, diabetes, psychological, whatever it is, there's no shame in correcting the problem. I'm glad you're recognizing the problem, now get some help and take care of yourself.

JSF-- are you afraid to go because of what you might be told? Or it is you thinking you are weak because you have something happening you cannot handle? If either of those are the case, let it go, and go see the dr. Unfortunately there are things that men cannot control no matter how hard they try. It is not a weakness, it is a disease. Like cancer. If you had that you would seek treatment as soon as possible, and do everything to get rid of or control it. Depression is no different. For the sake of your life, get it diagnosed and dealt with!

Sometimes you can't beat things without the help of someone else. (A Dr. in this case)
