Happened yesterday in the Mediterranean- he said he hit rocks that weren't on the charts. Three dead, at least 20 injured and several dozen unaccounted for.

Considering the average age of the normal cruise ship passenger, I'll bet trying to evacuate everybody before it rolled was quite a challenge for the emergency personnel. In additon to the human tragedy, just seeing a structure that size on it's side is surreal.

I can probably say whatever paper charts or electronic navigation was not up to date. On the other hand ocean floors change constantly. News says it was a reef. My guess is the navigator got too comfortable in this chanel. The old gentleman tradition of having the. captain being the last one onboard during an abandon ship catastrophe is long gone. Ask any squid in here will tell u that the CO is the first one out. My heart goes out to the victims

I would like to see as well the layout of the chanel. What, if any markers or buoys were set by the port authority. I know here in the states they do soundings constantly, especially in harbor waters.
Another factor could be what unit they were using for depth. I know most of my charts were in fathoms, and it would freak out the rookie been in the navy since breakfast officer when they saw we had 6 ft of clearance at the keel. After explaining our fearless leaders that the soundings were in fathoms not feet and there are 6 ft to a fathom that clarified a lot

I heard one report that the captain and crew drove the boat (on purpose) close to shore to keep it from turning upside down if it sank, because he knew of the amount of damage to the boat after the collision.

Quick and smart thinking if you ask me !!
