Feral hogs are unprotected, exotic, non-game animals. Therefore, they may be taken by any means or methods at any time of year. There are no seasons or bag limits, however a hunting license and landowner permission are required to hunt them.
The part in bold says it all. You need a hunting license to hunt anything, period. Just because you don't have tags for it or have to tag does not mean that you do not need to have a license.....

Honest question. Do you need one for Ram hunts? Are they livestock or exotics?

I did not know they had changed. I have heard our G/W refer to them as Depredation Hogs many times, and did not have a clue.

              Thanks Guys............

real question is did you find a place to hunt axis or get an invite. Good luck and happy hunting in that case.

let's not be so quick to jump on our fellow hunters for misconceptions about the laws.
lots of people have been confused about needing a license for hunting hogs. jees..

Please explain this for me. Taken right out the 2011-2012 TPWD Outdoor Annual, and I quote:
Exceptions: a hunting license is not required to hunt the following:
Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl.
Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.

And there is nothing in the regs that say you must leave them lay!!!

this is straight off TP&W website....

A hunting license is required of any person, regardless of age, who hunts any animal, bird, frog or turtle in this state (except furbearers, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license). No license is required for nuisance fur-bearing animals, depredating hogs or coyotes (see below). Non-residents under 17 years of age may purchase and hunt with the Youth Hunting License (Type 169).

Exceptions: a hunting license is not required to hunt the following:

Coyotes, if the coyotes are attacking, about to attack, or have recently attacked livestock, domestic animals, or fowl.
Depredating feral hogs, if a landowner (resident or non-resident) or landowner's agent or lessee is taking feral hogs causing depredation on the landowner's land.
Fur-bearing animals, if the hunter possesses a trapper's license or if the fur-bearing animals are causing depredation.

The annual is a summary of game laws.

would like to see this proof of depredating spelled out. Do you need written permission from landowner. Or just word of mouth from him, in your lease agreement.

Any game wardens on the GS want to clarify?

I have asked game wardens in several counties about the "depredating feral hogs". Every one of them told me to just get a license. One told me I would have to prove land ownership or my employment by the landowner as proof I was the "landowners agent'" to legally take hogs without licence. All but one said I had to leave them in the field.
All in all I say why worry about it? A license is cheap!
