    Rangers Talk... Yu Darvish

I hadn't seen anything posted yet. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this.

I was personally surprised to hear they won the bid after all the previous rumors of the Jays getting it. I think it's a lot of money to spend when it's all said and done on someone with zero experience in the league and given the fact that Japanese pitchers have not fared well with the exception of Nomo.

That said he has a lot of upside and projected to be front of the rotation starter. I'll trust that JD and Ryan have done their homework and know what they are doing. Also the fact that no other Japanese pitcher has ever had stats close to his helps as well.

He is not your "run of the mill" Japanese pitcher, though.

He is built more like the pitchers we are accustomed to seeing in the majors. I think he'll be a great #2 or #3. He'll probably come out and be awesome for his first few games and then hit a dry spell once the scouts figure him out a little bit.

As with all pitchers coming over from Japan - I am most concerned about his walk rate in MLB. The batters over there tend to be a little more like Mark Reynolds and his 200+ K's.

Texas Red has something this am but ....I'm in!...Daniels and Ryan know a lot more about potential than me. I'm excited we might actually have a full season front line starter in the rotation since Ryan or Helling....

I'm trusting Nolan and JD on this one. Hope he didn't bring any of his nudie pics

              Rotation next year of:
              Derek Holland
              Yu Darvish
              Colby Lewis
              Matt Harrison
              Neftali Feliz

With Feldman and Ogando in the bulpen to spot start. That might be worth watching.

This is how I see it shaking out as well. I think Ogando in the rotation would be great, but is great out of the pen as well.

I like this.....I just hope his insight wasn't what it was with Tateyama or the other one...

He's got a LOT more things going for him that Matsuzaka did when he came over to Boston. Size, age, & control at the biggest three IMO. I can't say how his successes will transfer from the Japanese League to MLB, but I think he has a the opportunity to the best import to date. GO RANGERS!!

I like it. The Rangers will make up the 50 million in ticket sales, merchandise sales, and overseas media/TV rights. I hope they are looking something like 5 years 60 million for him and that is fine with me.

As a Ranger fan it is exciting to see them in the race for players like this. It shows the ownership's willingness to take a chance to try to win.

I personally think it was a terrible bid. They are spending 51.7 million just to negotiate, then Darvish is projected to want another 5 years at $15 million per, so they will have $125 million wrapped up in a pitcher with 0 big league experience. Not to mention all the failed Japanese pitchers before him that should have proven that it is not worth the risk on Japanese players. I think he will have a good year, possibly two, before the big league hitters figure him out and Darvish becomes a footnote. As a national league fan, I am kinda glad the Rangers signed him so I can watch them gravel and squirm the last 3-4 years of this guys contract while they pay him $15 million a year for nothing lmao

Another prediction: this will be the worst contract handed out by the Rangers since Arod lol

Alot of homework was done on this guy. I like our chances with him in the rotation. I think folks will be suprised.

You do realize that Park is South Korean and Darvish is of Japanese/Iranian descent, don't you? Might as well be comparing a south Texas deer and a deer from Kansas...
