This is why i do not believe in shooting any animal anywhere but the lungs or heart. NO animal can live with out lungs. He or she may go a little bit, but they will bleed a lot and will die. I wish people would quite worrying about busting up the meat. If you shoot them behind the shoulder in the lungs, you won't destroy any meat and you will have LDP all day long.

Sorry for the rant, but I find it funny when people complain about not finding a dead deer when they don't shoot it in the vitals. If you wanted to be a sniper join the military or SWAT team. Lungs people, nothing can live without lungs!!!!
Agree, my buddy shot a nice one in the neck. Fell down hard, and got up and jumped a fence about a minute later.

If this deer was so big, why didnt the guy put another round in it to make sure it was dead?

"this guy" is my brother, and would you shoot a buck that was laying down in plain sight for 2 hours without moving? In any case, thanks for the input on neck shots.

If the deer was a trophy to me, and he was inside of 250yd, no. Over that, yea I would put another round in it if i thought it wasnt dead. But I wouldnt watch it lay there for 2 hrs either. Honestly I couldnt remember if it was your brother.
Maybe yall will get a shot at it.

Quite the opposite. They are called ballistic for a reason. They blow all to pieces. I have had a many a guided deer run off from a ballistic tipped bullet. I usually find them and they look like thay have been fragged by a grenade. This is why myself and the ranch owner has banned their usage on or ranch.

Three deer shot tonight with 45gr 22-250 hollow points. Two does were high neck shots and never moved. The buck was shot in the boiler room at about 150 yards and went 25 yards.

Dang get to skinning! My back hurts just thinking about it.

Neck shots are still fine! They are what I prefer on ANY game, that Im not going to shoulder mount.

Know your ammo, know your weapon, and know your prey. You owe it to the deer.

Setting in the blind now and wouldnt think twice about a neck shot on a doesky or pig. But Its COLD so it really better be worth it if I pull the trigger. Because when the hammmer hits the primer things die!

Two of us had them gutted, weighed, skinned and quartered and jaws removed in a little over an hour.

He waited almost 2 hours before he got out of the blind to go recover him. When he got within a few yards, the buck picked his head up, then got up and ran off! They only found a small pool of blood, about the size of a cantelope, on the ground where he laid down for nearly 2 hours and never saw him again.

He was using a .260 remington, with ballistic tipped 120 gr bullets. He said the buck was broadside and he took a quick shot, in the neck, before he ran off to chase a doe.

Without any bashing, or speeches about shot placement (I wasn't the one shooting to begin with) does anyone have any clue what he could've hit to make this deer appear to be dead, then get up and run off? I wasn't there, so this is about all I know.

Should we look for his remains? Or do you think he's still running around the ranch? Thanks for the help!
Had the same thing happen about 15 years ago with a shot in the neck. Deer flopped around and slid himself under a cedar tree. The shock gave him temporary paralysis. About 30 min later I slid him out from under the cedar tree, grabbed him by his antlers to drag him over to the side to gut him and he stood up. I'm there holding this deer that I thought was dead by the antlers and my gun is on a sling on my shoulder and knife still in my pocket. I'm glad he decided to choose flight over fight and ran the other way. I will never intentionally take a neck shot now.

We've banned ballistic tips on our rifle property cause of them fragging. I can say that bullets behave different in different calibers but for deer or pigs you are always better off using something jacketed that will hold together. I've seen some gross stuff by shots with Winchester silver tips. Our very own texastimetraveler was invited out here and took a doe with silver tips. He shot her perfect in the crease and the 270cal silver tip shattered and frags split her guts out. She ran 100 yards with her guts dragging. That's awful. I was sick for that deer. It was a good shot ... Junky bullet.
