I have an Encore and it shoots 100 grain Remingtons great- had these in the safe and rough sighted gun with them. Gun shoots inch groups at 100. Then I bought a box of Silvertips in 130 grain I was gonna let the kid hunt with- larger than a baseball at 100 yards. I have just been letting the kid hunt with 100 grainers and it is getting the job done but not getting an exit. I was happier with a 223 with Barnes. I know lots of folks shoot Encores and wondering what yall have had good luck getting to fly. I checked the website and I cant find on the S@W website any barell twist rates or anything else. Figured I would ask here and see what folks are having success with- I dont really care if it is 115 to 150 grains Ill try anything.

My hunting buddy has a Pro hunter in a 7 Mag. He has had extensive work done on it, trigger job, heavy duty hinge pin kit, shortened and re-crowned the barrell, new scope, etc. It will only shoot 3" gropups at 100. He is about ready to throw in the towel and get a diferent gun. He has tried every factory load and about a dozen diferent handloads with the same result.

Glen look on eabco's website. I think they have a chart with factory twist rates. I can't imagine it not being able to shoot 130 grain loads. I suspect you will just have to find the one it likes.

thats the kind of info i am after, personal experience. Thanks Mike D . i asked the question before but no one posted on it. No i have never shot through on, just looked at them in the store. i find with the pistol its easy to pull the shots and the tightest i can get my groups is ~3-in radius. I want to use this pistol as a deer gun and i think the pistol is a lot harder to shoot, but that kinda makes it fun.

One other thing. The 22-250 is a hot little round and performs best in longer barrels from my experience. You may not see much performance advantage over a .223 in a short pistol barrel. But you will get more muzzle blast and potentially louder report, more recoil, etc. I can't say this for certain as I do not have personal experience but do your homework before deciding for sure.Last edited by Mike D; 12-16-2011, 02:51 PM.
