    Another question for the Vets

I hate to post this here, but I'm hoping to find somebody who may have dealt with this before.

Our jagd, who is now a retired bloodtracker/hog dog, jumped out of the mule and took off on us three weeks ago. She was missing most of the night, and when we found her she appeared disoriented and couldn't chew anything. The next morning she was fine, although her toenails were all wore down and she wore the tartar off all her teeth (we suspect she had an armadillo or some other critter that she must have been chewing on, but no hair in her teeth). Anyways, two days later she broke out in a rash that resembled an allergic dermatitis. Red, raised bumps over her entire body, but especially the axillary and inguinal region. I gave her a benedryl, but it didn't help after another day or two, the bumps started to turn black and increase in number. We took her to our Vet and he suspected a staph infection. She had never been pruritic the whole time, but after several days on cephalexin she started to chew her paws. The skin scraping was negative, but we dipped her with Paramite anyways. She's also had an injection of triamcinalone and depo medrol. She isn't itching anymore, but the raised black bumps are covering her whole body. They're hard, like she has subcutaneous black bb's all over her. I couldn't squeeze anything out of the bumps, and they appear to be painful to her when I put any pressure on them. Our Vet is stumped by this, and I'm wondering if anybody here has ever experienced this. I think we may want to biopsy the bumps next, but if there's something less invasive that we're missing, I'd sure like to hear any ideas! Sorry for being so long-winded, but I really am desperate. Oh, and I forgot to add that she's been treated twice for erlichia. Thanks for any suggestions!

chief262- have you had something like that happen to your dog?

          Thanks for the bump TxAg.

I have seen situations similar, but it has always been secondary to some medication, a drug eruption of some sort, which does not seem possible given your scenario. If it was some odd type of allergic reaction, I would expect at least some degree of pruritis at the beginning. Still possible I guess, an odd delayed hypersensitivity of some sort.

Are the affected areas only on her ventrum or or they over her back on the haired portions as well? If you have done blood work, I would agree that your next step is the biopsy.

Any possibility she got eaten up by ants? I have seen a couple dogs take a day or two before the skin really started to shoe affects.

Her entire body is affected, including her ear flaps and tail. We first suspected ants, as the bumps first appeared on her ventrum, but then spread over her entire body. Now, two weeks later more and more are appearing. They look like a small raised pimple at first, then harden and turn black after a couple of days. There are so many of them, that there are about 2-3 bumps per square inch of her skin now.

Our Vet hasn't done any bloodwork. Would you suggest I request some further tests be performed? I think we're pretty much just shotgunning it right now, but it's obviously not working. Money is no object with this dog. I just want to make sure we're doing all we can to try and treat this problem.

Thank you so much for your response.

Have him do a full panel, CBC, General Health Profile, and electrolytes. I am just getting to work and will start to do some digging and see if I can find anything. Have any of the bumps started to to away? Still itchy?

None of the bumps seem to be disappearing. The first ones I noticed on her abdomen have turned hard and black. Today is the third day after the triamcinalone/depo medrol injection and she's starting to chew at her paws again. I'm going to take her back in today and see if I can't get him to do some bloodwork and maybe a biopsy. He just doesn't seem to be too concerned with it, but the fact that the bumps are not resolving really makes me want to do more than just "wait and see what happens".

Just got off the phone and he doesn't want to see her until Monday because he doesn't want the samples to sit in the mail over the weekend. He did suggest perhaps another triamcinalone/depo injection. She's only chewed at her paws once every 2-3 hours and today's the last day of her cephalexin so I guess we're just going to wait 'til Monday to get some blood work and a biopsy done

Why not just overnight them? You can always ask him to do that. I wouldn't give another depo injection already. That is an aweful lot of steroid in a shirt time.

Is she eating and drinking ok? Activity level normal? Gum color and refill normal?

Thank you so much for your help with this. I just took some pictures and sent you an e-mail. Her appetite and water consumption is about 3 times normal. Also I failed to mention that her color is good and crt is normal as well.
