Definately go with the slug in the .410. Have you considered Black Powder? Single shot Black Powder pistols are legal in Texas (not BP revolvers though). There are BP rifles in chambered in .45 caliber that are lightweight and you can control the recoil with the amount of powder you use. My step-kids all shoot Black Powder and love it. My youngest step-daughter is ten and she loves to shoot Black Powder; the only problem is her arms are very short, so shouldering a rifle is difficult. That is why I let her shoot the pistol. She hasn't got to try for a deer yet, but she is getting ready. Good luck with your search and happy hunting.
