Curious, but for $500, why not just get a base-model bushmaster AR-15? More accurate and for a wtshtf gun, 5.56 ammo is certainly more readily available in the US than 7.62x39 - unless you plan on being stranded in Asia or Africa with it. If you want a dual-purpose wtshtf gun, get a 7.62x39 upper later on.

The main issue people have with the tapco magazines is that you have to open the bolt to put them in and out. Its super simple and I didn't really explain much before but here is a picture of how you do it. It doesnt effect anything about the operation of the gun.

This is a view of the bolt as if you were looking down the barrel of the gun. Obviously you will have to take it out of the gun but that is the orientation. It almost looks like an I beam. I used a dremmel and then a straight file and oil to make the I into a T. Been shooting it like this for a long time now and the tapco magazines slide right in. the bolt still stays open after the last shot. If you wanted to get rid of the duck bill magazine it would be pretty simple to do as well.
