i'd get an SKS. i have an AK and i'm not comfortable taking a shot on anything past about 60 yards as it becomes too innaccurate

ETA: I'm not saying Ak's are precision rifles, far from it(They are battle rifles= pull trigger, things die). They are just a lot more accurate than most people give them credit for. Most folks don't know anything about them and buy the first thing they see on a table at a gunshow. Then when it sucks, they say all Ak's suck.. YMMV

I got a SGL-31 before the season start and have been using it as a pig gun for some time. I mounted a 4x ILL scope on it and have been testing ammo to see what will hold the best groups. My overall experience is that most surplus ammo will give you a 4 inch group at 100. The best group i have shot was when i weighed and measured Golden Tiger FMJ and shot a tight group about the size of a beer can. The 7.62 will stop a pig and is the major reason that i purchased a AK that cost as much as a good decent AR. Saiga sporter is the wtg in your price range.

We were out popping beer cans at 110 yds this weekend with my century. My AK gets pulled out way more than my sksLast edited by Gargantuan; 11-28-2011, 11:49 AM.

Both should shoot to 4" or better at 100 yards, at worst.
I prefer the AK simply for the larger, removable mags and the simpler action.

The gas piston on the SKS is 2-piece, with the second rear part acting on the bolt carrier, and on the AK the single-piece gas piston is connected directly to the bolt carrier.
