i'd get an SKS. i have an AK and i'm not comfortable taking a shot on anything past about 60 yards as it becomes too innaccurate

Much easier to put a scope on an AK if you get one with the rail on the left side of the receiver.

Go over to AR15.com and go into their AK section and research what to look for while buying a AK. Then buy an AK. You will thank Me later.. You can get 5 and 10 round mags for hunting if You are worried about carrying it around.

Really? You must have got the worst of a batch or a century AK, because I can Ring 8" circle steel out past 200yds with out any issues with a vortex strikefire red dot. Also have taken pigs at full run while standing at around 75yds with iron sights and all this is with a "POS" Romanian WASR-10..

ETA: I'm not saying Ak's are precision rifles, far from it(They are battle rifles= pull trigger, things die). They are just a lot more accurate than most people give them credit for. Most folks don't know anything about them and buy the first thing they see on a table at a gunshow. Then when it sucks, they say all Ak's suck.. YMMV

2nd edit: PM Me if You have specific questions...

I got a SGL-31 before the season start and have been using it as a pig gun for some time. I mounted a 4x ILL scope on it and have been testing ammo to see what will hold the best groups. My overall experience is that most surplus ammo will give you a 4 inch group at 100. The best group i have shot was when i weighed and measured Golden Tiger FMJ and shot a tight group about the size of a beer can. The 7.62 will stop a pig and is the major reason that i purchased a AK that cost as much as a good decent AR. Saiga sporter is the wtg in your price range.

                          I second this.
We were out popping beer cans at 110 yds this weekend with my century. My AK gets pulled out way more than my sks

Not to nitpick but they are totally different actions. Both use a gas piston( of completely different design) but that's about it, the SKS uses a tilting bolt and the AK has a rotating bolt. The gas piston on the SKS is 2-piece, with the second rear part acting on the bolt carrier, and on the AK the single-piece gas piston is connected directly to the bolt carrier.

Both should shoot to 4" or better at 100 yards, at worst.

I prefer the AK simply for the larger, removable mags and the simpler action.
