"Panels placed over the top are optional, but, without a top, some hogs may escape by climbing over the panels - especially if the trap is not checked regularly. An effective option to avoid completely enclosing the top is to cut panels into 1- or 1.5-foot widths and attach them along the edges of the top, extending to the inside, around the entire perimeter of the trap. This creates a "prison style" fence to help prevent feral hogs from climbing out".

Been trapping hogs for 20 years now. Seen them jump out & climb a fence like a squirrel. Had a hog climb over the side of a WW cattle trailer & get away, while I was trying to shoot him with a .22 pistol. Obviously I need to watch the Outlaw Josey Wales movie a few more times! lol
I use both closed top & open top traps, but my open top traps have 5-6 ft sides. You have to be REALLY careful to keep deer out of your closed top traps.
And yes, I am white headed, 58 yrs old, and couldn't give a rats behind if anyone considers me a "pro" or not.
