I needed some of them rookies with me two weeks ago when a 182 pounder jumped the middle 5 foot gate in my cattle trailer while Nostradenis and I were taking him and a few others to the buyer.

The first time, I saw him in the rear view mirror, he was in mid flight so I stomped on the brake and he got hung by his hind legs!!!!

Took 5 hard minutes to lift him up enough to free his legs without getting bit.

He was snapping and squealing and huffin and puffin and squirtin urine all over us, blowin noxious gas out accompanied by fecal chunks that splatted on the ceiling of the trailer and rained back down on us!

It was a nightmare on the side of the road.

The second and third time I just let him do it. Why he was doing I don't know.

If you don't have a top on a box trap put a game camera out and watch the big hogs jump in and out all night.

    Here's the jumper himself.

Hogs will pile up in the corners and climb one another to get out if you catch a group. 21 years old and Ive seen it happen. Been trapping since I was knee-high to a grasshopper with my dad.

Don't you love it when they jump up and stick their heads out the window and try to bite your face off!

            That always gets my attention.

read ALL the posts first and you will see that the one in my pic, is not mine. That is at a buddies ranch.

I don't even own any traps at this time due to spending to much time traveling.

This is just an opinion, and not judging others.

Deer getting into hog traps happen, no question. However, commercially made hog traps without tops are almost non existent unless youre talking the 6' high pipe fenced corral type one that are 30' in diameter and cost thousands. The reason is obvious, hogs can climb out, and will.

I've caught two young deer over a lifetime of trapping hogs (I'm a 58 yr old white hair as well), and released both with only scratches. Conversely, have removed dozens if not a hundred hogs. All went to see Jesus at some point.

                Worth it, IMHO.

Personally I don't like trapping. I love shooting them. Just the whole aspect of trapping I don't enjoy. Just my preference.

I have blue hair and some hog traps. I have a huge bull panel trap with 5ft sides. have had several hogs go over the fence.I watches a big sow jump up and get her front leg and nose over. She pulled with BOTH untill she got her other leg over and then she was gone! Now she has 11 pigs and they are tearing crap up but wont go back in that trap for anything!

I have caught several deer in mine from time to time and learned a cool thing from an old trapper. Use a tarp and attach it low enough so that only hogs can get under it. Drape it over top as it helps keep the sun off of them if you don't get back there right away. Once I did this, never had a deer in them again. Box type that is, not pen. Deer will not bend down and crawl under to get to the food.

Don't use corn, use some other bait like guts or table scraps.
