    Wolves in East Texas

Last Saturday evening my 13 year old son and I were hunting my father's place in North Nacogdoches County. He said dad there is a coyote. I turned and looked and this was no 35 pound coyote. This animal was as big as my Labrador. And he brought friends. There was a pack of at least 20 of them. We were 20' up in double ladder stand and they had no clue we were there. They came thru in no apparent hurry. It was the wildest thing I have ever seen. They were all around the same size but multiple colors. Some silver some black, some red. This place is very thick where we were hunting and although we could see them, no shot ever came available. Just curious if anyone else has seen this. We predator hunt a couple of times a year and have killed coyotes. These were big. We definately have a predator problem.

After yesterday I might have to agree with you.

I shot at and just over the back of the largest Yote I had ever seen. My neighbor raises wolves (REAL wolves) and after seeing this yote I thought it was part wolf! It even crossed my mind a couple years ago after one got loose that if they happened to breed with wild dogs or yote's we could have a real problem.

After missing the yote I used my mouth and did a squeal sequence that I have used multiple times when bored hunting to call in coyote's and bobcats. Either that yote or another came back by on the same path the first one came in on and "whack" right in what I thought was the perfect kill zone...my arrow was found right where I shot him with 6" of rear portion of shaft missing I'm assuming still in animal. I never found him as I was wanting to weigh the animal and post pics. Little blood past shot location!

I am pretty sure the red wolf, which inhabited East Texas, was extirpated from the area in the early to mid 1900s. Hope you get some pictures via game cam to find out for sure.

I had two come by about 10 years ago hunting the same location and let the first one walk due to not wanting to ruin my hunt. When the second one came by I took him and he was around 70#.

I had one walk under my tripod last year but was told by the GS they don't exist in East Texas. Maybe they are making a come back.

              a 70# yote?

thats a pretty darn big coyote... although that is a smaller wolf...

grew up in northern michigan. we had wolves, but you would seldom see them. depending on the species of wolf I could believe it. Why not? we got mt lions. Monkeys. bears. burrows. Why not a wolf that was at one time a native species?

No. He said it was more than one. That is a "Lone Wolf". LOL.

The Red wolf is the only wolf to exist in East Texas, but they are said to be extinct. They did not, however, come in multiple colors. Either a breeder let out their pack or they escaped from somewhere. Either way, TPWD should be informed of your encounter. A pack of wolves that large could do some MAJOR damage in East Texas, to native and domestic animals.

About 10 years ago my BIL told me they had some on their Nac Co lease. Jim gets a little excited once in a while so even as a 17yo kid I called BS. He made me promise not to shoot them (why I don't know) and put me on the East Pipeline Stand and sure enough there was about 8 of them! They didn't hang around long but I know **** well what I saw! Their face isn't the same as a coyote. I wouldn't say they were a whole lot bigger but it was deffinatly a wolf! That was neit Woden in the same Co as you.

The USFWS has spent over a billion dollars on their wolf re-stocking program, did you really think they'd just stop after Yellowstone?

I am just glad that this wasn't another thread about those shirts

I can see them coming back. We used to hardly ever see white wings in this area 10 years ago and now they are everywhere.
I might still be in that double ladder if I saw a pack of 20
