    The sharper the better.

surgeons use sharp blades so the scar will be easy to close up and make look decent. if you use a dull blade, it tears more than cuts, and scar tissue can not form cleanly.

Think about this for just a second. Is it easier to cut through the hide of a deer for field dressing with a sharp knife or dull knife? So why would you want to use a dull anything to penetrate the skin, much less vital organs??

If dull is ok, then why dont we all shoot deer with bowfishing arrows??

I have to disagree a bit. Surgeons use razor sharp instruments so that they lay back together and can heal quicker with less scar tissue. The cleaner the cut the easier it will lay back together and seal up. The more jagged the cut the harder it will be to fit back together. Have you ever had a clean cut on your hand close right back up and grow back together the same day? I like mine reasonably sharp but not to the point that the edge is so fine that it will lay over easily and become dull after hitting a rib or mud caked hide from a pig. Ever try cutting rope with a full edged knife vs. a serrated knife? I believe that a file sharpened head will have the best of both worlds.

I wonder how sharp most are after they pass through the first layer of hide and bone before they get to the good stuff?
