I got burned out on hogs a long time ago. I still like hunting for a big buck but not as much as I use to. If I see deer, I consider it a successful hunt.
I don't get excited about deer hunting in Texas anymore.
I don't enjoy hunting feeders, no satisfaction for me, but darn near a necessity out of defense.
My wife still enjoys hunting deer over feeders in Texas though, so, this time of year is for her.
I still enjoy my Kansas hunts, and actually hunting the deer, although I think time is running out up there due to Texas hunters introducing the feeder hunting techniques they use in Texas.
I am with you on the feeders. Sitting staring at the 3 legged deer god (feeder) just don't turn me on. Borrrring.... Do I do it ? Yes. Do I enjoy it as much as hunting trails, browse, etc that I have found thru scouting. No.
This is one of the reason we bought land in Iowa. No feeding allowed. When you are hunting next to a 1000 acre corn field like the one pictured below a corn feeder looses its relavance and effectiveness.

And they say there's no difference in hunting a cornfield vs a feeder.

Only in degree and concentration, both are food sources. I wasn’t brought up to hunt feeders or sit in a stand, never had either until I was 50 or so and then circumstances dictated I use both.. I’d much rather spot & stalk or ambush than wait at a feeder.. Might be part of the reason I’m soured on whitetail hunting, especially in Texas..

I understand your point and agree for the most part, but in most parts of Texas, corn is not a natural food source like it has been for decades in the Mid-west.
In Texas, corn is simply bait.
It is used solely to attract deer to a pre-determined spot so we/I can shoot one.
I think this is good for most bowhunters today,(controlled shot), but gives me no sense of accomplishment.
A cornfield doesn't necessarily position the deer.
You have to position yourself where a deer passes you.
You aren't alone. Wife won't eat venison and I won't kill 'em unless I've got someone in line wanting it. I like killing pigs because you still have to use some smarts to not get busted and they are a menace and usually plentiful.
BTW, a corn feeder is just a smaller version of that corn field or other food plot. To each his own and I don't knock either method. I also will still use a rifle, but what skill does that take? Not much. I much prefer to make it challenging with a bow, since you have to play the wind, control movements, and other tactics due to the distance between you and your target.
Spot and stalk hog hunting gets me going as well. Scouting on the ground with miles put on my boots and then setting up in travel corridors and along escape routes has always been how we hunted. Sitting over a feeder, just is not the same. Great to see the critters, but...just don't feel like I worked as hard to get the deer.

I see your point Rocky, I haven’t hunted over a feeder for Years; but do I hand feed, you betcha.
Whether I throw corn on the ground or the combine did, it’s the same thing…..BAIT, if you use scent… IT IS BAIT, if you use a decoy…IT IS BAIT, if you rattle horns, or use a grunt tube… IT IS BAIT.
I understand that for some folks a feeder, takes away, or lessens the hunting experience as a whole.
If it is more of a challenge you are after, hunt the hardwood bottoms, and the acorn crop. I did it for years, and it will test you.
You have to do more than find a farmers cut over corn field, or find a small patch of woods, or a tree line like you encounter in Kansas in many cases. I found Kansas to be much easier to hunt because of the fact that the tracks of timber were so sparse, it made the deer much easier to locate; and the deer encountered so few people they were not near as savvy.
Try hunting a 10,000 acre hardwood swamp with no terrain change, and no breaks on the timber. You have to be able to Id your food sources, find them, and hunt accordingly. Give hunting this type of terrain a try if you need more of a challenge.
It doesn’t sound like you are bored hunting whitetails so much as you are with the method of take. No need to change the game you hunt, just the way you hunt them.
I continue to hunt in Texas, but it needs to be colder for me to hike into the bottom with my climber.
Like I said I have nothing against feeders, or corn used as bait, my wife still hunts in this manner.
I prefer not to.
If the deer in Kansas are so much easier to pattern and locate, why are so many Texans using feeders?
I guess I should rephrase my post. The ONLY time i get wound up over a whitetail is when i'm in the stand with the kids or my wife and you can see how excited they are. That's AWESOME. I'm just not into for myself much anymore. I read that over and it didn't really explain what i meant very well.
