Lay out lots of feed in a sendero and wait- I put it in several areas and just go by and check them. Once they find it you wont be able to keep them off it.

That's a good bet right there. If the weather is good you can hunt them all day. They're not really like a feral Hawg that moves mostly at dawn and dusk. They're fair weather animals and usally move in groups and feed throughout the day.

You'll likely have a good sized compartment to hunt in with a stand or two and a pop-up or the cab of your truck isn't a bad idea either.

      Good luck.

Yeah, I just found out I got drawn for the Javi hunt in February for the second year in a row. Last year I had one of the smaller units in the middle of the Chap to myself. Saw ten javi right off the bat crossing the road where the game biologist was showing me the boundries. Got down to cut them off and they were all over the place, but I didn't get a shot (fast little buggers). I got up in one of the tower stands after I had baited and a nice boar stepped out in the Sendero about 90 yards away right as I was losing light. I was able to get my javi the first afternoon.

The area is basically brush and cactus but with some nice senderos. I would stay on the roads inside the units and senderos and not wander far off of those.

The camping area is very nice and fenced off. As far as baiting, you might call before the hunt, like I did last year, to make sure that you can. I know some of the guys were salting the roads and senderos.

I would also say to be prepared with cold weather clothing. It got down to 25 degrees the first night I was there. A lot of the guys weren't seeing many javis in the morning and I think it might have something to do with it being so cold. They seemed to move more when it warmed up.

Plan on camping. Your odds of getting a hotel room in that area are slim and none. With the oil activity they are all booked.

Yeah, the Chap's campground also has a shower in the restroom area.

Ok guy's I'm a little confused here. I also got drawn for the February Javi hunt. In the letter I received it says no baiting is allowed. Some of the posts above mention corning the sendero's which is how I normaly would hunt Javi's. Can we use corn or not?

According to David (runs the Chap) baiting is not allowed. He is a personal friend of my dads and the Siesmic company I work for spent a little over a month on the Chap working this summer, so I spent a lot of time hanging out with David. They don't feed the animals because they are doing a study on them. Now they may allow it during the javi hunt because I only talked to him about the deer hunting for the most part.

did they quit allowing protein pellets as well as corn ?

I went down last year on the archery hunt for deer and could bait with protein pellets.

Not sure about protein pellets. I just remember David telling me that they don't allow baiting and they don't supplement the feed for the deer because of this being a research area and they wanted their research to be done with all natural conditions.

If I was going on the hunt, I would call up there and ask.

Yep... I don't think they ever did do the food supplement deal due to the research type activity they do. For gun rifle hunts, in the past they did not allow baiting. I think they allow the protein pellets for archery and kids.

Gonna try to go on standby again this year for archery.

for the OP... if you bait... they will come... all hours of the day. they are fun to stalk. the low areas are the best... but it all works.

you will have a good time down there.
