    Running rough ? Engine light flashing

    I have a 2004 5.4 was driving yesterday doing 65 and started up a hill and started running rough. Let of gas pedal and was fine try to accelerate and felt like had an transmission problem or tire out of balance. Engine light was flashing during the event but would go off after it settled down. Try to accelerate again would do it again. Owners manual says flashing light means engine misfiring. Any idea the problem ? I was thinking cam sensor ? Safe to drive 30-40 miles ? Any input appreciated.

      Cam sensor or you have a coil pack that got wet on top of the spark plugs. If the little tool looking light starts flashing then you have a tranny problem.

      Also those 5.4 from 04-07 had a bad problem with plugs breaking off in the heads, if you haven't had them changed yet and you plan on keeping the truck I would do it asap. They have two piece plugs in them and need to be replaced with a one piece.

          Not wet for sure. Wonder if driving might leave me stranded ? or damage more. No tool flashing.

            We've replace both sides of injectors are separate times. Each side was about $1800, labor and parts. Could be the wire harness too, which is in there with it and labor is almost as bad for that since they need to open it up.
            How does it run when you start it?

              Could be plug, injector or coil pack,if you take it to one of the part stores, they should be able to pull the code and tell you exactly what the code means

                Runs fine idles smooth and goes down the road ok till you try to give it a lot of fuel.

                  Kind of had to tell..what else is it doing. If the Check engine light is on I would run by advance or autozone and have them check the codes. Even if the light isn't on sometime is stores the code anyways. I have owned a 03,04,07, and two 2010 F-150s with the 5.4s so I know a little about the issues those things have.

                    I was told it won't help it if it's an injector or two but it's not preferred but can be done. We have the #1 injector out now and the wife has driven it for about 100 miles.
                    I'm not suggesting this though, she's done driving it till we get it fixed next week.

                      need to check what codes were set and go from there.

                        only problem with ckg codes is if it is setting idle no lights flash and runs fine. Only under load does it act up.

                          I had one and it did something similar, turned out to be coil packs on the plugs (each plug has its own coil)

                          Could you have gotten gas with water or trash in it?

                            that sounds more like a TPS or a MAF sensor if so equipped

                            TPS = Throttle position sensor
                            MAF = mass air flow

                            wonder if the computer is in cripple mode?

                            is it the check engine light or a wrench light?

                              If it is a wrench light its a tranny issue... Man everyting that was posted above happened to my 04 F-150 turns out the tranny went out and needed a rebuild. I had lost my reverse gear.
