    Meat Grinders?

    Question for you guys who grind your own hamburger-

    What grinder do you use?

    I'm looking into getting one, and would like to know what works best.

    This is the one I have from Northern Tool. It's a great meat grinder and a fantastic value for the money. I have no complaints.

      i'd say at least a 1hp model. Cheaper and heavier is what you're looking for. Cabelas has an outstanding line. Dont buy any models with plastic housings. You want all stainless steel.

          I have been using the Maverick De-luxe Meat Grinder Model #6386 for about seven years. It was recommended by a butcher in NYC of all places....I ended up with him on the phone after wearing out another grinder the second year. He said I couldn't wear this one out. I'm still trying to prove him wrong.

            Saw that one on sale at the Northern Tool in Grand Prairie for 89 bucks. Think that was the price of it. Looked like it was good quality as well.

            On another not, they also have some fairly cheap LED flashlights and a real nice 4 LED headlamp for 6 bucks.

              The Cabela's 1.0 hp grinder is $360. Northern tools 0.8 hp is $99.

              As for the plastic housing, that's just around the motor. Most power tools have their motors housed in plastic these days and it's not a problem. The part that grinds the meat is still steel. And the rest that touches the meat is aluminum... very easy clean up.

              Not saying the Cabela's grinders aren't great. They probably are. But, for the average home user, I just don't think they warrant the difference in price, since the Northern Tool grinder works so well. Maybe if you're grinding more than 7 or 8 animals a year it might be worth spending the extra money. But I can tell you the Northern Tool grinder can grind a whole deer as fast as you can feed it into the chute (about ten minutes usually) once you have it deboned and cubed.

              Keep in mind that the blade and plate do all the work. The rest of it is just something to make the blade go round and feed the meat to the blade. Not exactly rocket science, ya know?

              Tip: After you wash all the metal parts to your grinder, dry them and spray a light coating of Pam cooking spray on the steel parts. This will prevent any rusting and ensure they're ready to go next time.

                    I had used a "heavy duty" kitchen grinder for several years and managed to get by just fine with it, so I thought. It ground three pounds a minute but I had to cut the meat into small chunks (about 2" square), had to trim all the sinew (or it gummed up the plates) and it helped to have the meat partially frozen (so you don't have to stop to clean the plate every ten minutes). My husband finally insisted I spend the money on a new grinder just a few weeks ago and I got the 1hp Cabelas commercial grinder and my only regret is that I didn't do it ten years ago! I ground a whole deer in less than three minutes, and wouldn't have taken that long if I had a third hand to keep feeding the meat in as fast as it was being ground. Did I mention that I love this machine?! If I don't get a deer soon, I'm going to go shoot one of our dorper sheep just so I can have some more meat to grind.

                      Ground Mutton Yummy. I've got the Northern Tool one too. Best birthday Present I ever bought myself! Like Snakelover said tho do clean the blades and dry them right away & oil. The good steel will rust faster than a Kimber pistol.

                          for you guys with the northern tools grinder...can you buy replacement blades, plates, sausage stuffers?...or will the ones that fit cabelas or basspro's grinders work?...i went and looked at the grinder today and will purchase it if there are available replacement plates, blades, stuffers...thanks

                              I researched, compared prices and read reviews for awhile before making a decision. I ended up buying the one from Northern tool.
