    Food plot question

With the drought conditions the ranch manager is probably not going to plant our food plots this year. Anyone have a suggestion on something that could be planted without discing ? It's planted every year in winter wheat and oats. Do you think regrowth from past seed heads will be enough if we get some rain. Any input is appreciated

Winter rye is about the best there is....not rye grass but cereal rye. It will just about grow in a parking lot. All you need is rain to germinate.

without rain....and alot of it. I would plant rocks, cause thats all that will make it.

There will not be enough seed in the soil for "re growth" most planted seeds are a hybrid anyway and have poor planting capabitities. Rye grass, clover, oat and wheat ALL will grow with only soil contact, (better planted, but will grow some).

But there is NOOOO WAAAY I'd plant anything now, and I'm a food plot freak

I'd plant some of that Throw N Grow. You just throw it on the ground and pray for rain. Of course, mixing up the soil with a rake would be helpful. And be sure and plant it in a low lying area where there is more moisture.

So am I That's why when he said he wasn't going to plant I panicked. I understand the reason but I was thinking with the range conditions the way they have been I sure wanted to have something to help this winter

No till stuff is junk. Any seed worth spending the money on requires sub soil contact. You can still put in oats, rye, or wheat. These large seeds will stay viable in the soil for up to several months. When you get rain, then they will come up. That will be your best bet.

I would go ahead and plant winter wheat. When it DOES rain, it will be ready. Shame you don't have it planted now, we're expecting rain this weekend.

This is pretty much all I'm going to plant this year.

call Turner Seed in Breckenridge and see if they have any of their seed blends that they think will take with a rake and drag - Their stuff is formulated for this areas soils but I don't know how much rain it requires.

Don't matter what you put out, if it don't rain on it, it won't come up. Now having said that, I spend $550 last weekend on seed and fertilizer that's still just laying in the dirt! Keep praying for rain. Food plots are bunch cheaper than protein.

Everyone talks about "planting" seed. I am new to food plots can someone tell me what it takes to plant a food plot. Do i have to have discs, cultipackers and such or can i just scrape the surface and throw out the seed? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
