glad you got it worked out. Not cool on his part to just invite himself. i know a few guys like this and it kinda ticks me off. Being it's your first bow season seems it'd be better if you guys did just focus on yourself and not have a tag along but that's just me.
Letting someone who has no experience with a bow hunt pigs is just as unethical as letting them deer hunt with no experience. Them being a non native nuisance animal does not make it right....
I'm not going to read all the responses. My best friend is on my lease and his wife is hunting (bow) off his tags. I had no problem telling him she needs to practice before and is able to hit a pie plate from a sitting position at least 5 out of 6 times before she can hunt.
It's the right and ethical thing to do...
Make him shoot targets first, he should then recognize his limitations with respect to what shots he is capable of. In other words, dont simply tell him hes not ready, make him realize it for himself. ( assuming he understands the need for a clean ethical kill)
Take what you will from this. Back many moons ago I hunted with a guy that could hit a dime at 20 yards more often than not, but you put a deer in front of him and all bets were off. So the pie plate thing or watch him shoot at foam is not valid IMHO.
I hate to say this, but if you saw the thread "my 2011 lioness" it will show you that someone who has bowhunted for 34 years, killed 63 whitetails several pigs and 22 African animals, that brain farts still happen. I am by no means saying I know what is best, but as we all know, you never know just how you or anyone else will react when the moment of truth arrives.
I am happy you got it all worked out with your buddy, do some off season hunting with him, set up targets and invite several people to play horse (like in Basketball) set up tough shots that will make not only him but everyone think. Peer pressure is a mother. you will then see what kind of nerve he has. If peer pressure rattles him shooting at foam, then I will bet that a heartbeat ( live animal ) will push him over the edge. You may even discover a few things about yourself or other hunting buddies.
Again not trying to start anything, just sayin.....
