My experience they turn to go right back where they came from. I figured it was because they just came from there and know it was safe as well. For the few that havent, they normally turn back into that direction pretty quick.

My experience has been that the shot deer runs toward perceived 'safety'. My feeder is in the corner of field, with woods all around it. Shot deer have run in the direction they were facing or in the direction from which they entered, but they have never run out into the field - always into the woods.

I don't think you can predict that. They could run...
where they came from
where they were going
into the wind
toward cover
with the herd
away from perceived danger
away from perceived source of pain
... the list goes on and on.
I think you just have to make a good shot and hope for the best.

I hunt in one area where I have killed 6 or 7 deer , both bucks and does, and everyone of them has run towards a dry creek bed about 50 yards to my left and behind them, some made it some didn't. I don't know why, but they all went that way. And it isn't the direction they came from. Who knows???
