Which direction will a deer normally run after the shot?

The way our property is laid out, we have to hunt near the property lines. My stand is about 100 yards or so from it. My question is, will a deer normally turn and run back where it came from, or continue in the direction it was headed after being shot? It seems like most of the videos I've seen have them running in the direction they were headed. I'd like to do as much as I can to avoid a deer getting over the fence.

I have always heard they will run in the direction they knew was the safest before they were shot. But i have seen them run in every direction after they were shot.

It would be ALOT easier to get permission to cross the fence than it would be to figure out which way they are going to run after the shot.......

              Don't over think it!

I agree, but that property is in limbo right now, tied up in "undivided interest" and deaths in families.

Over thinking something will kill me one day, I am sure of it. Combination of engineer, nerd, geek and severe ADD all in one mind is a dangerous thing.

Yeah, random... Hopefully, with a well placed shot, they wouldn't run more than 100 yards.

                    Whichever way they want!

But..... I've noticed over the years that most deer hit hard/smoked, tend to run random directions (short recovery). Deer that are hit uh........ less than perfect, tend to turn/circle back in the direction they came from(long recovery as they have time to head to a bed and lie down).

And.... I've always heard that they tend not to go "uphill" but I've seen that theory proven wrong numerous times.

                    So............ I don't know. lol.

Good luck on a short recovery!

Almost every deer I shot has run whatever direction they are facing and if it is a long blood trail, they eventually get back to where they came from before the shot.

Away for sure but normally downhill or path of least resistance with variables in there like if they are trying to follow another deer or multiple deer. Say you shoot the one in the back of the group, more than likely they will all run and that last one you shot will try and follow them and stay with the group.
