Spending time driving all over Texas and Louisiana I constantly see (insert here) throwing lit cigarrette butts out the window to which sparks fly and smoke follows.

Do people NOT know we are in a severe drought?

I'm not for making stupid laws but this one is over due in my opinion. I have never understood why it's not littering to start with?

I'm starting to write down LIcense Plate numbers/location when I see a Butt go out the window. That way if his butt starts a fire I have info. for the LAW.
I know it might sound a bit over the top but 1 tiny spark and there is no telling how many lives and Property are at risk

I have always wondered why people arent pulled over and given a ticket for it. Since the police write tickets and that builds revenue why dont they build an endless revenue this way. So many people smoke and toss the butts. Start writing a 200 dollar ticket for each offense and either build a huge revenue for the police force or people will get the hint and stop throwing them out.

A wildfire is any unmonitored fire in the wilderness that spreads out of control. It might be a forest fire, a brush fire, or a grass fire. There are three classes of wildland fires. The most common class is the surface fire, which burns along the forest floor, killing or damaging young trees. A ground fire is started by lightning, and burns on or below the forest floor in the humus layer of soil down to the mineral layer. Nineteen percent are caused by cigarettes, often tossed out of moving cars.

Eighteen percent are caused by burning debris. Small, controlled fires to burn leaves, deadwood, or trash can spread to the surrounding wilderness if they're left unattended or the wind shifts unexpectedly.

Nine percent are caused by lightning. There are more than 40,000 lightning storms around the world every day, and about 100 strikes of lightning every second.

Eight percent are caused by machine use—hot exhaust pipes coming in contact with dry grass, for example.

Six percent are caused by campfires improperly located, incompletely extinguished, or left burning unattended.

Fourteen percent are caused by other random events.

Biggest pet peeve of mine in the world! How can you have respect for yourself when you can't even respect the ground you walk on?...my blood truly boils when I see people flick their disguisting cigarettes out the window. It's bad enough I have to breath your second hand smoke much less watch you disrespect the ground you are privileged to walk on.

And those that smoke with their children and babies in the vehicle. Don't even get me started. What a shame! That should be considered child abuse and have repercussions!

See this everyday one I-30, someone driving with their cig hanging out the slightly lowered window so they don't smoke up their car or clothes. What a A**H***. Red hot ashes falling onto the roadway getting blown into dry grass. Then they throw butt out so they don't smell up their car. What an A**H***. They shouldn't have the right to smoke or breed.

Sorry DFW but I have to call bs... Anybody with any since would have told you to get bent! You can give someone a ticket for littering but you can't make them sweep the ground OR go to jail. Then you spent the next hour watching this 'criminal' sweep the concrete? Tax $ well spent... Wow. Musta been a kid...

maybe some folks should calm down a bit and stop calling people names. and lumping all smokers into the same category is just wrong. not every single smoker throws butts out the window.

and where does anyone have the right to question my love for my kids, or judge me accordingly. please try not to hurt yourself when you step off your high horse.

If I'm not mistaken there are only something like 2 laws on the books that you CAN'T go to jail for.
In other words, you can be taken to jail for just about anything.
He gave the guy a choice of a ticket and a trip to town, or he could sweep up.

Now, could the offender make a complaint against the officer for making up a punishment that is not prescribed by law? Probably.

But telling him to "get bent" would have resulted in a trip to jail, bailing out, THEN you get to tell his Sargent how mean he was to you...

He didn't make him....he gave him a choice. The guy chose to sweep.

I can remember getting stopped with beer underage and getting a choice. A MIP or pour all my beer out on the ground. By your theory, he couldn't have physically forced me to pour the beer out, but he could ask me if I wanted to do it or face the alternative..

Sounds like the man would have rather swept than told the officer to get bent and get a ticket/go to jail. I know I much rather preferred pouring my beer out to telling him to get bent and receiving a ticket and possibly a ride to the pokey.
