For a true safe, check out sportsmansteelsafes.com. I have been in their showroom in houston with a friend that bought one. High quality and free shipping.
Strange. My BIL has one and he hates it. Says it is junk.
All safes have limited fire protection & really boils down to time before the inside reaches that destructive temp. Best bet for protection is making sure the safe is located on an exterior wall, preferable on the corner of the house so you have brick on two sides limiting the flames effect. What you are trying to do is give FD as much time as possible.
I also prefer dial over the electric as I've had two buddies experience failur after an electircal storm. Just fyi...
The U.L. rating the safe has determines it's actual effectiveness against burglary & fire & should be considered.
I just bought a safe from A&C, it was delivered this past Saturday. I wound up with a Winchester safe, that was re-labeled as a Red Head. I bought it from the scratch and dent section, and got a pretty good discount.
I was looking at a Cannon, but came to realize that it lacks bolts on the top and bottom edges of the door, and is a lighter gauge body. The safe I bought, is the same size as the Cannon, and outweighs it by over 300 lbs.
Adam was really good about explaining the differences in manufacturers, and was right on time to deliver on a Saturday morning.
Ultimately, I want to build a vault in the basement, when I get the chance to build my own house. Not only will it serve as a gun safe; but also as a fire proof room, and a storm shelter.

I usually prefer dial over electronic as well, but strangely enough, I had to have my S&G dial replaced within a month of getting my current safe. ALso, it's much more difficult for my wife to gain access to the safe as well. She has stuff in there too so she needs to get in there from time to time.
As to the UL fire ratings, the problem is there is no standard testing method on how the test is to be performed. Some manufacturers start their "time" as soon as it's rolled into the furnace and the igniter is hit. It takes a long time to get a furnace up to 1200-1400 degrees. And I bet you that their furnace isn't lined with sheetrock or concrete for fire insulating purposes.
Just do your homework and get the safe that bets fits your needs.

Called my buddy and ask what his thought's were on his safe. He said it works perfect, just like the day he got it.[almost 2 yrs. ago] His was the Crown series, payed around $3000 for it.
I bought a cannon from academy about 10 years ago for $600. It's a good safe for someone on a budget, but I wouldn't put several $1500 guns in it. My father in law bought a Liberty and there is no comparison. My next safe will be a Liberty.
5k is a hell of a whole lot of money! Wasnt planning on spending that much. Since you "seem" to have an idea of a good safe what exactly do you prefer?
I don't follow your thinking at all. When you said you were saving up for a lifetime safe I hope you didn't mean spending 899.00? Second every fire arm you buy is 1500$?

Their higher end ones may be better. My BIL did not spend but about $1200 on his and it has to be on a dead level surface or the bolts will not lock because the box twists on it.
I bought a 26 gun(yeah right) 1 hour fire rated Cannon safe. It is on an exterior corner of the house and opposite end of most potential house fires(laundry, kitchen, water heater, AC unit). I have outgrown it and need another one soon.
