Sometimes I wish I could just be that beer belly tailgate dove hunter that never strays more than 3 feet from the cooler. But no...I'm that guy that will do and try ANYTHING to improve the chances of getting me or my friends a limit of birds. If there are lots of birds, I'm either gunning for "fastest limit" or "least shells" limit.
The field I picked up this year is 25 acres of flowers - Pflugerville City Limits. There are as many birds there now as one could possibly hope for - thousands. But what if I could get just A FEW more into the field? Gotta try.
Yesterday, Nathan and I spent time (more than was allocated by the wife unit) working on a water system for the dove field.
Home testing...

Being a cultivated field, I thought this would be a cake walk....shovel a little dirt, fill a pool, etc. After four hours of chiseling concrete-hard blackland, we kicked on the pump.

Before and after pic...

My dad went out this evening for a look-see. He called a few times saying I would never believe how many birds can fit in and around the little dove tank. Woohooo...a project that works out!
Am I happy now? Nope...the next few days, I'll be working on putting up a "dove tree" between the bird bath and the hay bales. It's a sickness, I tell ya!
Anyhoo....what lengths do you go for doves???
Note - as mentioend in another post, I lost my wedding ring out there yesterday. If you have a metal detector and want to give it a shot, bring your shotgun and appetite.
